Directly, no. But taxes are the government's job (well.. sort of) and they affect the economy - as does relations with foreign countries. In World War 2 the government pumped so much money (>$200B) into the economy for war materials and got us out of the Great Depression. And put us at least $200B more in debt...

If by pumped you mean borrowed. That money wasn't raised by taxes (directly).

Hence the mention of it putting us that much further into debt. They borrowed over $200B to spend on war materials that boosted the economy out of the depression. I find it odd that I've heard so often that "WW2 saved us from the depression". No it didn't. The government could have borrowed $200B and put it into the economy without the war. They just would have been hard-pressed to justify it.

And what industry can the government afford to tax? With the issues that we are having in the auto industry that really only leaves pharmaceuticals. And they are having massive lay offs and many have done away with there benefits which is a big sign of trouble. With our exports so low the only thing the government can tax is the rich.

Although I like unions I have to say they are destroying our industry.

Well they certainly can't not tax any industry. They need to get money somehow. But if they really really needed money, I'd say porn, alcohol, and tobacco. People will find ways to pay for those even in the shittiest of times. Or they could legalize and tax marijuana.

Yea but further taxing them will kill anything left in them. And they already tax tobacco and alcohol. In fact in my state you cant even own a liquor shop.. They are all government owned.

Dick Cheney for Prez.. He has always been my favorite around this joint..

As for the rest of ya George Bush loving lackeys... Not all of us are money grubbing young republican club wanna bes who think Big Business is gonna take care of you. I work for big business and i can tell you the only point is to invest the profit in third world countries so they can send your jobs over there and payment people 1/10 of what they paid you here.

If the American consumer gets angry enough they will finally be lead down the road of being serviced by automation entirely which will then allow business to pocket that last tenth as well.

You may question goverments motives of taking care of the people but big business motives are quite clear... They simply DONT WANT TO.. You only get what you get outta them because they are forced to give it. Otherwise you are simply an expendable expense.

The middle class really just wants to feed their familes, educate their kids, get to know their neighbors, pay their modest bills. They are sick and tired of money grubbing corporate america tearing this country apart in its chase for the all mighty dollar. I just refuse to think the central core value of this country is GREED.

Interesting that someone used BIll Gates as an example of a success story. I seem to remember a number of court cases here and overseas about the way he built his empire not being quite legal.
