So there's a Star Trek, The Next Generation marathon today.  I just saw an episode where Data, the android commander for those of you who have been living under rocks for the last 20 years, says that his brain capacity is "800 quadrillion bits."

The image “http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/bc/STMeasureMan.jpg/270px-STMeasureMan.jpg cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

In this episode "The Measure of Man" (1989) Data is ordered to undergo a procedure by a cybernetic scientist, but it could kill him.  This is the episode where Riker is the prosecutor in a trial to prove Data is only a machine by hitting his emergency override button to turn him off.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Measure_of_a_Man_(TNG_episode)

So, thanks to Google covnvertor, 800 quadrillion bits is equal to:

93 132 257.5 gigabytes = 90,949 terabytes

At Newegg.com, the biggest external HD is an 8 Terabyte HD for $2,600.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822101110

It's just an enclosure with 8 bays for 8 1-Terabyte HDs.

So it would take 11,368 of these things to equal Data's Brain.

The cost would be $29,558,425 for that many of these things.

Since these are 7 inches wide, if you set them next to one another along the side of a road, they would extend 1.25 miles.

Yeah, I've got nothing better to do with my day off.

The dimensions of these things are:

18" x 7" x 17"

I thought for like 30 seconds that I could try to calculate how to stack these things so they would form a cube, but that would have required me to think about the problem more than I wanted.

So, you have the dimensions.  If you want to figure out how to stack them and how tall, wide and deep the pile would be, be my guest.

Not like The Jetsons.  Welcome to the far off year of 2 thousand and 4 AD!  Damn if the creators of that show created Data we'd be watching an episode where the members of the Enterprise marvel as they find out that Data can take 5 and a half inch floppies up the ass and gasp at what amazing techology he has.

Welsey Crusher may not have 800 Quadrillion Bits but he has my heart.  He also has a hot mom.

That's a lot of porn. I wonder how many times per day Picard uses him for his special "Data sessions."

The real question is, how does that compare to the estimated capacity of the human brain?

I'm almost positive I heard a comparison of an average human brain's memory to disk space somewhere.

The wiki article that has the above info can be found here:

WIKI

"His storage capacity is stated as "800 quadrillion bits" or 88.817842 petabytes or 93,132,257.5 gigabytes, and his processing speed is stated as "60 trillion operations per second" or 60 teraflops."

They just approved a 200-core computer.  Read about it here:

NETWORKWORLD

"It'll have up to 2-petaflops processing speed, more than a petabyte of memory and a 10 petabyte disk storage system. It'll also have more than 200,000 processor cores, and cost around $208 million,"

Too lazy to figure this out:

PETAFLOP WIKI

Someone please convert the above processing speed numbers for comparison.  Too lazy to do it myself.
