The following information is not fabricated. These are true events based on my own memory and observations from living with the individual for 5 months.
Following the fall season of '99, my roommate and friend, Endyss left our living arrangement in the dorms and also our university to side with the devil. OU. While he claims that the "programs" were better...it is my believe that he left me because i did not wash my socks enough and often commented on my "smelling them to see if they are clean" . It's true i had a "multi echelon" system for clean clothes
Before I had a wife, but I digress...
My replacement cell-mate was a Pakistani born individual named Saief. I cannot remember his last name. Now remember this is before the tragic events of 2001. I really didn't mind and was actually kind of excited that I had a foreign student living with me. My first impressions of were often whimsical. He would constantly ask me questions about all manner of things, almost like a child. "Hey man, what time are we allowed to eat", "is this shirt Fashionable?", "what time are we supposed to go to bed?", "is there any time I can't go to the bathroom?" (These are not made up...I distinctly remember each of these questions, among countless others) It took some time but I eventually convinced him that he managed his own schedule now and could do whatever the hell he wanted. He like this very much.
When asked about his home he claimed that he was the son of a very important family back in pakistan somewhere and that if he acted weird it's because he was afraid that Indian (east india) nationalists legitimately target him for kidnapping and he wasn't safe anywhere. He would spend some time talking about how much India and pakistan hated eachother and gave me a short personal history of the Muslim religion so I could better understand where he was coming from and to outline the religious tension in that part of the world. But he never preached any hate or terrorist mantras. We never had any tension about differences in beliefs and he was usually pretty easygoing.
Saief was going to school to learn to be a pilot. He was quite excited about flying and constantly talked about it. He seemed genuine enough and really put alot into his aviation courses...but quickly left his other studies to fall behind. He was
that consumed. Whenever he was scheduled for flying lessons it was really the only thing he focused on the whole day. At the time it seemed like just somebody really passionate about learning to fly...
And then there were the calls....
God help me the calls....Almost every day he checked in with his "father". Often times I would have the pleasure of talking to this guy and the conversation would go like this: "
Hello?" "
Put Saief on." "
He isn't here right now, can I tak...." "
When will he return?" "
I don't know he usually....." *

Then literally 5 minutes later he would call again. Same dialogue. This would go on until Saief either came home, or I unplugged the phone. I am not exaggerating....Once I wanted to see how long it would go on....he called 48 times over a 5 hour period one saturday. Calls would come at any time of day. Late night, early morning...afternoon....there was no schedule...which i thought was weird. Saief claimed it was because his father was worried about the kidnapping thing...yeah okay man...your dad is fucking crazy. They spoke in arabic so I have no idea what was said when they conversed...sometimes it seemed heated. One time Saief was having trouble and missed a flying lesson....I could hear the tension in both voices as they argued like he had just done some horribly terrible thing that was unforgivable.
Now to be fair, he wasn't like some secluded guy...he had lots of friends on the floor....he seemed eager to jump into western lifestyle and try things. Loved American women. Hell he even sometimes played Counterstrike on my computer (and additionally put a bunch of shitty arabic pop music mp3's on my machine...)
Now as the semester was coming to an end he seemed more and more skitterish...mostly about how well he had learned his aviation materials. He spent most of the dead week working on navigation tests...and no other courses got attention for finals week. I thought he was just being irresponsible, but hell. I let him borrow my graphic calculator to help him out a bit. Well at the end we talked about living arrangements and I told him that I planned on getting a single next year..and he said he was going to do the same...so we picked a floor together, Kerr 10. When we returned after summer....Saief was nowhere. Non of his aviation classmates, or his good friends, or myself knew what happened or had any communication. Phone was shut off. he stole my graphic calculator.
I dunno. I never saw him in any photos of attackers....i wonder if I ever will.
