Dear WDF,

How come I can get into Electronica so easily?

Usually I need time to ease into a new genre of music. In our age of Pop music, our ears are used to certain melodies. Everything else sounds foreign to me until repetitive exposure.

Yet I'm amazed by how easily I can get into a seemingly un-pop genre. How come?

Not avoiding this question, just formulating my answer.

Electronica is a pretend genre. We've gone over this before.

In any event, here's the answer:

Electronic music is one of the most diverse and dynamic forms of music today. I don't give a shit what these Dave Matthews fans think, that shit is tired.

Rock music has been stuck in an age of repetition and the same old used up format of One or two guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, and a singer. Usually the singer has some problems he'd like to force you to listen to.

I've found most rock music... even good rock music... is mostly listening to someone scream the writings of their diary at you. I like music because of the music itself, not the message. Sure, sometimes there's a message you can connect with... but many times you're in it for the music.

It's all the same. It's gotten to the point where you can play song after song on top of eachother and you'll notice the similarities. There's nothing innovative about Metallica releasing another album. It's the same old shit, with the addition of "Depends^TM for Aging Rockstars."

Electronic music, as a whole, is an incredibly diverse genre. People accuse the genre of stealing from other genres... It's really the other way around. The reason I love industrial rock so much is because of how the two genres I grew up listening to can learn to work together to make something that isn't restricted to a certain audience or a specific genre.

Now, in answer to your question, it's because electronic music today is the only genre of music that continues to push the boundrys of music itself. Electronic artists continue to experiment with their music. They continue to meld and morph sounds into something listenable, and often times good. They can take sounds that you'd never imagine could be musically pleasing to your ears and turn it into a melody you can't get out of your head. It's really incredible.

The reason that you can get into electronic music so easily is because todays pop music borrows heavily from it. It's just shitty. You're used to hearing the daily shit forced down our throats. All of it, in either a small way or a major way, takes heavily from electronic music.

Shit, Kanye West, for example... the once shining "savior" to the rap industry. What does he go and do with his recent album? Oh, that's right, he samples Daft Punk's Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.

Then if you step back and consider the hip hop genre as a whole, you realize it's just bastardized electronic music. It's all produced similarly. It's all sampled beats and sounds. Someone just inserted a grill wearing, gun toating, pre-con into the mix and called it Hip Hop.

tl;dr:

Electronic music is so easy to pick up because everything you're used to hearing on the radio or in pop-culture borrows heavily from Electronic music influentially. The music industry that tells you what you should like listening to essentially prepared you to find electronic music. Now you've found it. Congratulations.

EDIT: Also, the high energy that Electronic music brings makes people feel good. Gives them a boost. It's feel good music.

Also, none of that rant made any sense.

Electronic music > all. There.
