Two articles I ran across today were printed Oct 30, 2008.

Polar warming 'caused by humans'

"The rise in temperatures at Earth's poles has for the first time been attributed directly to human activities, according to a study."

MIT scientists baffled by global warming theory, contradicts scientific data

"what baffles science is that this data contradicts theories stating man is the primary source of increase for this greenhouse gas"

So we have these scientists going around saying their model proves humans are the cause.  These scientists treat anyone who doesn't agree with their conclusion as some sort of backward-thinking dolt.  Then you have other scientists who say the evidence isn't there.  WTF is going, you say?  I don't know who to believe, but I refuse to go along with the crowd on this topic.  Most of the crowd seem to have some feel-good connection to the whole green movement anyway.  I am all for cleaner air/water/food/pr0n/etc, higher mpg and everything else, but existing models are NOT sufficient proof to demand major changes in lifestyle and policy.  More research please.

In other words...the debate is still on and any claim it's over is shortsighted.  We don't have a complete understanding of the environment and the computer models can't take into account all known factors and I say known because we may not know all contributing factors to climate.

I think we should focus on adaptation if anything.

Science is awesome because it's really just fancy arguing. Scientists generally have come to a consensus that global warming is real and that human activity is a major factor in it. They argue about the details, and some of them still argue that it even exists, but that's true about pretty much every aspect of science. Even gravity is "only a theory".

This isn't gravity though and the evidence that supports anthropogenic causes is based entirely on computer models.  That's not exactly hard data.

Yeah, the 70's predicted global cooling.

We should have a Science & Technology forum..

Wasn't the purpose of that Earth Simulator supercomputer in Japan to study global warming? I'll be happy if I hear news from them, or if I hear that all these research groups with conflicting conclusions start working together.

That is largely an urban legend. The whole "global cooling" thing from the '70's was never the consensus position and was almost exclusively the product of media hype. Idiots use it now as if it provides some kind of evidence that scientists can't be trusted on global warming now, but it's complete bullshit.

It's beyond my scientific (med pro) mind... HOWEVER, up here in the Colorado mountains at night...  baby, it's cold outside...

And the cooling position taken in the early 20th century? :)

QFT.

So of the "greatest minds" of today can not agree, but the media sure force feeds it every chance they get.  AL GORE GOT AN EMMY!  That should be proof enough, right?
