Because if he had endorsed the white candidate he'd be called an "Uncle Tom" (as I believe both Powell and Condaleeza Rice were called when they supported the Bush administration).
Actually, come to think of it, a black person is only an "Uncle Tom" when they support the Republican white guy. If Obama was white and McCain was black, and Powell endorsed McCain, then it'd all be about race. Black man endorses black Democrat against white Republican? That's just a principled stand on policies!

- Black Democrat vs. White Republican
- Endorse Democrat = Principled stand = GOOD!
- Endorse Republican = Uncle Tom = BAD!

- Endorse Republican = Race Baiting = BAD!
