Thing worked like a beast for years. I hadn't used it in maybe two or three months. I plug it in and it doesn't show up like it's supposed to. Fuck around a bit (reinstall itunes, etc.) and now it will show up if I plug it in and then start itunes and let it sit for a minute. Except itunes says "this shit is corrupt, restore it!" and when I launch the restore itunes seemingly locks up. The ipodservice process is running and is using the CPU like it's doing shit, but there is no indication anything is actually happening and a restore shouldn't take 30 fucking minutes (the longest I've let it sit in this state). Anyone have ideas? Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

according to steve jobs yr supposed to buy a new ipod every year, that said, if it was working fine before you let it sit arround, i would buy a battery off ebay for $6, ipod batteries go south pretty quick especially if u let it sit discharged for a prolonged period if youve nvr taken yr ipod apart, here are some good guides: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod/ you can also put yr ipod into "diagnostic mode" and run some tests http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml MakeSureItsCharcoalGrilled wrote: yes. please go fuck yoruself and die.

its an original shuffle so its very limited in what it can do. interestingly enough, I hooked it up to a random mac and the restore worked fine. now it cant be detected at all on my computer. I think the real problem is with itunes and not the ipod. although you would think uninstall+reinstall of itunes would solve that issue. I'm gonna uninstall and then dig up my fucking registry and see what I find... Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

Well, you can always jack a friend's iPod shuffle as long as it's the same model, back up all his data, replace all your iPod's files with it (even if it's corrupt it'll still show up as a removable drive in Windows), and then restore it again with iTunes. And if worse really comes to worst, you can delete everything the manly way with the Registry Editor. Win Cookies Awarded: 7 (bawwwwww)

wow cheney, youre really running the gamut of sucky tech here...as for my advice: Take it to the Apple Store. there you can get them to check it out, and likely wipe its memory out completely, and reinstall the software in a way that us normal humans dont have the ability to. They do have the tools to do this, cause ive done it myself before. also, if it is truly and goodly fucked, they might be able to hook you up with a new one. its worth the trip imo. as far as the whole itunes psychofuck that youre experiencing....thats a tough one. it sounds like you didnt have these issues before plugging the shuffle in, so that makes me say the shuffle is to blame, but youre also dealing with something taht is really beyond the touch of the syncing stuff that goes on. iTunes isnt generally this malicious when it comes to uninstalling, so it sounds like youve got something in the background messign with things. but hey, you could grill teh apple store people if you go down there, and maybe get further than by asking a blind panel of self-proclaimed experts (as awesome as we are). your first problem is that you're using itunes. www.getsongbird.com download songbird and see if that fixes your problem. then get new firmware for your shuffle then give me 30 bucks. love don sharp TerribleNate wrote:Fuck nice... love don sharp Songbird is almost cool. Why it sucks: It doesn't detect my ipod. It's slow The shuffle randomly stops working and it decides to not play any more songs until I click play again It's slow It doesn't skip through the playlist to show which song is playing It's slow You can't pause by clicking space bar, or skip song by hitting arrow key Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

someday Songbird will get out of beta and be great I promise..... but yeah until then its missing a lot of functionality and is buggy as hell which is by no means a working replacement for a fully fleshed out program. especially the one its trying to imitate. Bah Weep Granah Weep Ninny Bong

i'd be pretty sure this problem is coming from itunes, and not from your shuffle. Itunes has a nasty f*cking habit of leaving processes running that it shouldn't. it's probably locking up because it still has threads or something from other processes still running and sitting idle. first port of call should be the task manager to see what it's left over this time, although not everything it's tasked with seems to appear. personally , i'd just nuke the sh*t out of it and be done with it for good. oh and in response to itunes isn't generally malicious... bullsh*t. it's among the most invasive programs i've ever worked with. My Mum has an iPod. i have a Dell (which runs creative firmware). been running it fine for about 4 or so years until i installed iTunes for me mammy. iTunes basically locked me out of being able to update my Dell, it essentially disabled the software i was running and nuked the drivers i had for it. this was a pretty frequent occurence for many users like me. it also developed the habit of nuking our external HD. HD runs fine until itunes is run. after itunes is ran, it can;t read the HD properly. reboot at least needed, sometimes have to reinstall the drivers. yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

well I just gave up and ordered one of those little sandisk mp3 players for $55 or something off newegg. I like the itunes interface, it's generally quick to do the kinds of things I do. the rest of it is all bleh to me and a waste of resources. I hate the stupid ipod synch shit, just let me copy fucking mp3 files to the thing and it looks like this is what has fucked me. I did try the nuke it from orbit method, I suspect that the issue is NOT directly itunes. I think it may have something to do with my usb being funky somehow - I ran into another possibly related issue when I idiotically let the stupid logitech mouse driver bullshit update itself - it died a horrible death and now my mouse is gimped. I can't use my key bindings (I have an MX1000, I have several buttons mapped so I can use them in TF2). Doing this also seems to have killed my logitech webcam. Yay for logitech and their insane 80meg mouse drivers! What's really funny is that I can't fucking reinstall my mouse, it's no longer detected as a logitech mouse. So anyways, I suspect there is some super-weirdness going on with USB in my system. I don't really care enough to waste all the time digging into it right now, I have a random blank HDD laying around so I'm thinking I may get all fancy and just reinstall my entire system, it's been almost a year so I'm overdue anyways. If my new mp3 player doesn't work properly with my USB funkiness then I'll probably go for it. I just dread having to re-download all the steam shit, it takes forever.
