Sen. Orrin Hatch sponsored a proposed amendment to the Constitution prohibiting flag desecration which failed to garner the necessary two-thirds majority support from the Senate by one vote yesterday.

The U.S. Flag Code states, "The flag, when it is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferable by burning." I read ALL your private messages.

Politics and web forums dont often mix well...I've seen threads as such spur very angry movements within the community and I would really hate to see this place go that way... But in the spirit of civil arguments, I think flag burning should be allowed. We are after all entitled to say what we believe (contradicts my POV on the other religious thread but thats beside the point). If i was so angry as to be moved to show it in a passive yet violently effective way, burning the flag would be the best direction. You don't hurt anybody and no real property damage is done while maintaining a peaceful yet effective protest. However, old school politicians will be as such to limit what we can do to their narrow scope of tradition. Ya, because the First Amendment to the Constitution lets you do it. However, they wanted to amend the Constitution again so that you couldn't do that. The First Amendment is where your right to do that originates. If they take it away in the very document which gives you the right, you don't have it anymore. End of story.
That's why you should vote for folks who think the way you do, whatever position that may be, because they may eventually decide stuff which will affect you and all your descendants. As a veteran who wept over draped flags of my fallen buddies while hippie friends burned the flag in the 60's... I have two questions. When is an "act' considered "speech"? Is burning the flag saying, "I hate the USA", as our enemies do?
Maybe we should burn all our cash... because we don't like IRS and high taxes... or shoot all bald eagles... or let KISS write a new national anthem...
That makes perfect sense in alignment with the 1989 Supreme Court argument... And we wonder why we're so screwed up... The amendment missed by one vote in the Senate... I trust it will become law in due season... (proper burning is for worn or soiled flags).
Declaration of Independence
Happy 4th of July... a holiday of fireworks and drunkenness for some (as I did years ago), Some will forget why we celebrate... some will even burn the flag...
For many it is a day of appreciation and love of freedom... a day to raise the flag for others... my flag will be flying in my front yard. I wonder what other countries have in place?
Do Brits burn their flag? Yes... but there are nations where it is illegal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_desecration
However, in the end... no flags will fly. And you are all free to say what you will, but be respectful of those that fight for old glory. You can respect them by respecting the symbol that represents the cause, which is the freedom to type (an act called speech).
George Washington is credited for saying the following about the symbolism of the flag:
We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty.
Yes... God bless us all...

Really what they should do is ban all flag burning except for on specific days of the year and in specific areas. The only flags allowed to be burned should be ones that are in extremely worn condition, or heavily soiled. (Honestly, if you treat a flag right, there should never be any soiling, and hardly any wear and tear) Sure it takes away part of your "Free Speech" rights, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. Free Speech doesnt mean you get to run around yelling "FUCK *insert racial term here*". Free Speech doesn't mean that you can walk up to a police officer and start swearing at him/her because you got a parking ticket. IMO, Free Speech is taken too far, too often in this country. People hide behind it when what they did/said should truly not be allowed. I'm still confused why someone would burn an their own country's flag in protest, and then turn around and try and hide behind something that their country fought for, and allowed them to have. Shizzle: Very thoughtful... It is the spirit in which we speak that draws the line...
