So I ordered a new computer from Alienware last week. I could have built it myself but in my old age (24) I've lost the will to tinker with shit on my free time, especially since I deal with bs tech stuff at work enough as it is. Anyways here are the specs, and yes, I'm cutting and pasting from the website: Alienware Area-51 X58 - Intel® Core™ i7-920 2.66 GHz 8MB Cache
-
Single 2GB GDDR5 ATI® Radeon® HD 4870 X2
-
6GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 3 x 2048MB
-
500GB SATA 3Gb/s 7,200RPM 16MB Cache
- Killer K1 Gaming Network Interface Card
- 22" Samsung PornPerfect™ Monitor
The only thing I would have changed would be a solid state hard drive, but it's still too early to find a decent price on one. Either way, I'll hopefully be able to accomplish my goal of playing whatever game I want on the highest setting and having one comp dedicated for work, one for home. Hasn't come yet, will prolly arrive just before christmas and after I leave for California this weekend. Oh well. More to come when it's here. get your ass to mars

Nice. Yeah solid states are too expensive and not big enough yet. Probably will become the norm in 3-5 years though. I was looking at one for my laptop...but just couldnt bear the cost for so little HD space compared with comparable mechanical HDs. Quote:

Looks fine. The 4870x2 is overkill for 1680x1050 but whatever. Also, the Killer Nic is totally useless. Better to save the $100 and use onboard.

You will need Vista 64 to utilize all 6GB of RAM. That or a server OS as no flavor of XP will support it. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

I think his build comes with an OEM Windows Vista 64 bit home premium. Quote:

why not just put a lighter to your wallet? you just paid a premium for overpriced incomplete hardware designed primarily with servers in mind. It may have four cores, but unlike the core 2 quads, this one has 8 hardware threads. no application you use for the next year at least will fully utilize that hardware (not even GTAIV afaik). a Q6600 would have been a much better spend, just overclock it a little. but i've said all this in another thread... that's not saying i'm not jealous though. I'm sure you'll get great satisfaction out of that rig. yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

Other than poo pooing on your choice I think what everyone meant to say is that it looks like a killer rig that you spent your hard earned money on. If you like it and you are satisfied with it then that is what is important.

Agreed. I spec'd the machine up with those future apps in mind. When they come, I'll be there waiting. Then again there's this quote from Rockstar: "Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available." .....so maybe it is in check with my needs?
