Last week I reformatted my computer beacause it had not been done for over a year and was very slow, I spent a long time re-installing Windows and all my games and programs. On Sunday while I was on Failblog.org, I got an Information bar at the top of Internet Explorer saying it had blocked a download, I ignored it but shortly after that Internet Explorer crashed. Just as I went back to the website I started getting spammed with adverts and software was installing itself on my computer, I had obviously gotten a Virus.
I have managed to remove it using Windows Live OneCare, but my computer is now slow and laggy again.
I was telling my friend about this and he said that people are being warned not to use Internet Explorer beacause of a serious security flaw. So I had a look on Google and found this:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/technology/microsoft/3793365/Internet-Explorer-security-alert-Microsoft-says-all-users-at-risk.html
Quote:The flaw allows criminal gangs to take control of people's computers and steal their personal information when they visit websites that have been corrupted by malicious hackers.
Quote:By last Saturday about 0.2 per cent of Internet Explorer users had already visited one of the websites designed to exploit the flaw
Quote:What’s new about this situation is that there is no fix.

if you still use IE7 you get everything you deserve. I actually can't understand the hubbub over this, IEs been known to be a flawed piece of junk for a long time now. anyway, as for the browser; even though i still use Firefox myself, i'm not sure i'd actually recommend it. the only positive it has is the add-ons, but really the two best out there at the moment are Opera and Chrome (i'd recommend Opera because of the whole Google turning into big brother thing). the main issues when it comes to browsers anyway is to use basically the least popular ones; all the browsers have security flaws, it's as much a case of some being targeted more than others. as for getting rid of that virus itself; what AV are you running? by all accounts Avira is the best of the free alternatives, and i've certainly found it the best (AVG has gone to shit lately, they are slowly turning into Norton v2). there's no harm in running two or three AVs concurrently though so if i were you i'd install AVG, Avast and Avira on that machine, and disable two to use just on demand. other programms to look at in conjunction with spybot are Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Ad-aware, and of course, HijackThis. there's no complete solution these days, the best thing is just to have variety on the machine. as an illustration of this; the first and only virus i've had on my current machine i got only a week or so after getting it, a pretty covert and serious thing (the kind that are installed to steal bank details). I'm running a Dell, so it came with mcAfee installed. McAfee actually picked up on it, but couldn't remove it. downloaded AVG, it couldn't see it. my Dad had an extra Norton license running around, installed it, couldn't see it. spybot couldn't see it either. tried using HijackThis, but couldn't remove it. in the end it was Ad-aware that was finally able to remove it. yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

There can be harm in running multiple AV packages, some of them don't get along with each other and if you use autoscanning features or have schedule scans which overlap then you can see some really serious slowdown on your system. Personally I don't run have any AV installed, I just don't do dumb shit that could get me infected. Every once in awhile I may run housecall or stinger. There actually is a really solid complete solution available now: Vipre from Sunbelt. They make Counterspy, which in my opinion is the single best anti-spyware program around. Nothing gets everything, but nothing else I've ever evaluated has done as good a job as counterspy. Anyways, Vipre is their AV software - it does everything that counterspy does and it does AV too. I've not used it in a production environment, but in my testing it kicked McAfee's ass, and considering my experience with counterspy I'm inclined to believe it's just as awesome. I just wonder why anyone would ever, ever, EVER want to use IE at all. Everything about it sucks.

Personally I don't run have any AV installed, I just don't do dumb shit that could get me infected. Every once in awhile I may run housecall or stinger. if you're silly enough to allow more than one scan at once, no doubt. but there's no real potential for 'harm' to be done to the system, the worst that will usually happen is that one scanner will pick something up in the other's vault. personally i disable all processes and startup features of all the AV i'm running, because like you i've very little exposure. I just enable them now and then to run the on demand scans periodically. I prefer to just run the deep scans anyway and let them sit doing it overnight, hate using the lappy when something is running in the background. sound, i'll check that one out to add to the list. I'm developing a habit of just collecting anti-spyware these days for the sake of it :) yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

Same, thats why I didn't install an Anti-Virus program, But as my link says, hackers can corrupt legitimate websites and then take control of people computers.
When I first got this Virus I e-mailed Failblog.org to let them now about this, today, one week later they replied, they wanted to know if an Ad popped up or anything like that. When I replied to them I told them about the Security Issue I later found out about in IE saying that I think is what must have happend.
Ive read that Microsoft have now released a patch to fix this on the 17th,
