Well, I finally got my 4870 x2 video card, but of course, already ran into problems. I try to play Call of Duty: World at War. Its fine when navigating through the game menus, but once i start the actual game... in a matter of seconds, my pc totally shuts off and restarts.

The BIOS is updated, the video drivers were reinstalled, vista aero turned off.

This was a fresh install on vista 64.

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Pr...spx?Item=N82E16813128358
Current power supply : http://www.newegg.com/Pr...spx?Item=N82E16817152037

I have no idea what is causing this problem. I do not know if its some sort of power management setting on the motherboard or what.

I will be calling the graphics card manufacturer tomorrow and see if theres anything they can offer. Other than that, the card may be defective...

Thanks for any help.

Power supply. I'd put money on it. If all other 700w PSUs cost ~$100 an $80 one makes some serious compromises. What card were you running before?

It was a 4 year old 6800 ultra oc, on vista 32.

If the power supply is the problem...would I be even able to return it? I had removed the UPC code for the mail-in rebate.

Yeah, it sounds like the power supply to me.  I've had similar errors and although it wasn't necessarily because of insufficient power, the power supply itself wasn't really the best quality and therefore gave me issues.

Are you sure you hooked the 4 pin connector to the graphics card?

NEVER SKIMP ON THE POWER SUPPLY!  Why do people do that?  The power supply connects to EVERYTHING in your computer.  It is just as important as your motherboard.  Always get a quality one.

As for returning it, good luck.  Most places will not take it with the UPC missing.

The 4800 series X2 cards have  8 pin AND 6 pin Pci-e connections.  They both have to be hooked up because there is one for each GPU.  These things eat power under load.

Yes, I am sure all the connectors are connected.

And there would be no other reason than the junk powersupply? I guess I live and learn.

I was looking at these for replacements:

Any suggestions on these?

I would feel comfortable with either the first or second. The first is definitely a higher quality unit and would choose that one. Just a caution though, despite its silencer name it isn't much quieter than most units.

Alright, thanks for the advice.

I was eager to get a new powersupply so I went ahead and visited the local microcenter. They did not have the pc power and cooling one in stock, but did have the corsair one. I put in the new powersupply and it works like a charm.

Thanks for the advice, the 4870 x2 makes things look great.

I live by a microcenter in Tustin/Anaheim/Santa Ana CA. Is it a good place?

For some things, it is. My family buys our pc's and laptops there since they are helpful in the case of something going wrong. I wouldnt go there for everything though, they charge outstanding amounts for some products, like most pc components. I do like them for most of my computer needs, though, and alot of the time, have good deals going on.

fuck sake man, you need at least 650w power supply with that thing (don't they draw around 200watts+ or am i raving?), personally i'd go a little bit over.

<insert generic rant>

Also make sure you're power supply is from one of the decent brands like Corsair etc, a 650 PSU from a decent brand is typically the equivalent of an 850w from the unbranded PSUs. the PSU is one of the few things where it pays to pay for the name.

<rant>
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.
