Many of you that play along side me know that my computer crashes quite frequently. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. I don't know that much about computers but I believe it could be my moniter which is causing the computer to crash.  My previous moniter broke down so I had to borow someone else's. The old one was an energy saver but the one I have now isn't. Could that be it? When I had my previous moniter it didn't crash but ever since using the new moniter, my computer keeps overheating and crashing. Could the moniter be exerting too much energy from my computer that it overheats and shut's off? Really the main promblem is the overheating but I believe the moniter is the cause of it. I don't think I need to buy a new fan either since I really didn't have a promblem until using this new moniter. Could someone help please.

I don't think your monitor could have anything to do with your actual computer crashing.  Now, I'm no expert, buzzsaw will probably slide in and tell you what's what.  What kind of ventilation do you have in your computer, have you dusted the insides lately??  Might wanna open the side panel and look at your cpu heatsink, dust can get in the fins and cause all sorts of trouble.

Buzzsaw will be here soon with the correct answer.

Chances are VERY slim that it is the monitor. My best guess is that when you swapped monitors you may have knocked your vid card around. I would try reseating it (i.e. open your case and push down on the video card to make sure it is in the slot snuggly).

I've never heard of a monitor causing a computer to be unstable. Most likely like Dick Cheney says, you probably knocked something loose when swapping the monitors.

If that doesn't work, I'd recommend taking everything out of your motherboard (except CPU of course) including power cables and what not and replug everything in to make sure nothing is disconnected.

That sucks... a loose connection, as mentioned, may be right on... but I'm curious...  what kind of "engine" you running under that hood, fubar?...what are the specs/ ram etc?

I have an AuthenticAMD 2082 Mhz processor, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 video card and RAM is 511 Mb.  The problem is the overheating though. Could dislodging the video card cause overheating?

How do you know it is overheating?
Also, what model of CPU is that? (A64 3200+?)

I don't know the model of cpu but I know overheating is the promblem because it gets hot and I mean really hot behind the computer where the fan is and towards where there is a circular spere with a bunch of littles holes. I have to put my computer downwards and place a big fan above it to cool it down. Yea yea I know, real funny,  but it works....well sometimes.  It also tends to overheat when I'm playing the game or watching video. Within 5 or 7 minutes of playing the game, it shuts off but when I use the fan, it could sometimes go hours without crashing. But recently that hasn't been working. The more I think of it, all signs point to the video card but could that really be it? Could it cause the overheating?

Go to Walmart, Kmart, Radioshack, or any place that sells electronics.  Buy the tall can of air duster (canned air) open up the side of your computer, locate the heatsink/fan for the cpu, and blow the shit out of it.  If dust is built up in your box, especially the cpu heatsink, you are going to overheat like crazy.  What kind of ventalation do you have? Do you just have the heatsink fan, and an exhaust in the back?

I agree - make sure to blow out the heatsink/fan on your video card and blow your PSU too (but be careful with that one, do it in short bursts and don't stuck the nozzle inside of it).
Once you have done this power it up and visually check that all your fans are spinning properly.
Installing something like Motherboard Monitor might be good too - most of the time it can read heat sensors built into your gear.

Typically a CPU overheating will autoshutdown the system and a video card overheating will at a minimum leave you with visual distortions and at a maximum lock the system. I can't really recall ever seeing a system power itself off because of a video card overheating although it certainly sounds plausible.

What kind of PSU do you have? (brand + wattage) I have seen a few situations where a PSU became underpowered as it got older and then would autoshutdown when there was too much draw on it, that might also fit the scenario you describe...

ooh and if you do go out and get the air dust, keep it as close to a 90 degree angle(can straight up) as you can while spraying it,  if the chemicals come out as liquid they instantly go to like -150 f and could burn you.

I've actually seen this happen, it's not funny.
It's like instant frost-bite and is apparently very painful.

At work we have a laser pointed thermometer, and tons of air dust.  I've sprayed the liquid onto a table and taken the temp, it made the thermometer go to E for error cause it couldn't read that cold of a temp. That shit is dangerous.  And they most likely won't sell it to you if you're under 18, cause kids huff that nasty shit to get high.

Since the others have identified that its most likely an overheating problem, download Speedfan and check your CPU temperatures (most of the time its the first number)

If you've got an A64, if the temperatures go above 55C it is the CPU overheating.

If thats the case than I suggest heading over to Fry's and getting a third party cooler for it. I suggest the Zalman 7000-B Al-Cu and also you want to buy a tube of Arctic Silver 5. There are directions on Zalman's site on how to install it and you should be good to go.
