So here's the thing. I'm really poor. And I'm having a hard time paying for school. Fall quarter I covered myself, I was hoping I could find a job but I haven't yet. I begrudgingly asked my mom to cover me for winter quarter, she did. Winter quarter is now under way and Spring is coming up. I still have no money.

I really have no experience. I worked two summers for a landscaping company and did some painting as a volunteer. I don't have a car so I'm effectively restricted to local employers, that is unless there's a shift starting at 3:00 + time of bus ride. I've been looking on the street (in my neighborhood and Capitol Hill) and on craigslist and everything is either far away or requires experience I don't have.

I've been considering the military for a while, but I'm a little reluctant to join because of personal convictions. I consider it a rock-bottom last resort.

Any advice? Any opportunities you know of?

financial aid - get some. even if you take out loans, it's still an awesome deal - the interest is crazy low.

wow, blockbuster over an awesome job with whut.. you take the cake sir.

Formally known as MrT
The film "Brokeback Mountain" was originally pitched as an off-beat romance starring MrT and WhutDuFuk. The sole reason the two legends declined the starring roles is because if MrT and WhutDuFuk were to kiss, there would be new meaning to the word homosexual...it would mean "obligation".

Agreed. FYI, some of the best jobs you find are through connections. Seriously look at everybody you know and see what they could offer you. I'm not saying ask your uncle for a handout, but maybe someone could point you in the right direction. My last resort would also be military, I'd prolly choose Navy or Air Force. The other option is law enforcement. At least something with hope for resume building/promotion.

Retail is a dead end road, especially Blockbuster. Seriously, Netflix, downloads, Cable TV, etc., have all taken a huge chunk out of their profits. Don't ask me tho, look at the10 year chart of their stock price ($30 back in '02, trading at $1.40 today). Prediction, they'll try to go internet, but their operating costs are simply too high to stay in business. Just wait, the shit will hit the fan fir BBI within the year. As a new employee, you'd be the first to take the hit.

Agreed.    I don't think blockbuster is going anywhere soon, however, as far as a job...the only problem with it is that it really doesn't develop you much as worker.  You aren't going to learn a skill, like you would apprenticing with Whut.  Any jerk can get a job at blockbuster, try to find a job that gets you a skill.   If its not a lighting rigger/grip, do somethign else....I was a tire-hand/front end/brake tech through highschool and college.  it was hard work, but I was learning something that i could take with me forever.  I developed a sense of pride in how hard and engaging my work was compared to these kids at blockbuster and fast food.

Clarification: What I'm doing in the summer is different. I was planning on working at blockbuster now, until summer. Trust me, I would take Whut's grip work over blockbuster any day, but the other thing I may be doing is > whut's, because it's relevant to my long-term career interest.

Both the hollywood video and blockbusters around here just went belly up... lol.

The thing about my job is that it's taught me so many skills that I can apply to so many other aspects of my life. It's wonderful.

Lead, if your mystery box job doesn't work out, I might still be able to get you an internship. It won't be great pay, but it's $50-100 a day under the table.

Yeah I went down there and the guy said they weren't hiring. He also said he didn't know my friend. So.. my "friend" probably lied. What his motivation behind that was I have no idea. But I really hate being lied to. So I'm in a grumpy mood right now. If I flame anyone, know this is the reason

Anyways thanks for the offer whut, I will contact you for sure if my mystery box internship turns out to reject me, because there isn't a snowball's chance in hell I'm going back to landscaping.

So it turns out that internship starts in may.. in the middle of my spring quarter.. supposedly. And also I have been out of contact with one of my reccommenders who was supposed to have recommended me.. but on their website they say they haven't gotten it yet. So I think my chances are diminishing.

But on the plus side, I might get to work with whut! Which is alright.. I've thought about getting into special effects as well so maybe the showbiz knowledge will be beneficial? Also, the laboratory is in Richland.. really far from Seattle. And I don't have a car.

Dude.

1) Make sure you always fill out the FASFA every year.

2) Talk to a financial aid rep at your school.

3) Take out loans to cover school and cost of living.

Granted loans suck, your education will pay its dividends out later.   Well worth it.  Best of luck, and stay in school!
