Fuck I hate suits.

All of my experiences with suits have sucked. Basically they're too puffy in the shoulders or some shit. When I put my arms straight out or up the sleeves tug to my wrists...

I hate suits!

Now, I assume this has been because I have had cheap suits that weren't fitted properly.

This is fine.

Anyway, I need to buy a new suit. However, I want the suit to feel like it belong on me. I don't want to look out of place. I find most "standard" styles to make me feel out of place.

So, I am asking for your advice. I need to buy a new suit. What do you recommend.

If I hear pinstripes you'll be banned for three days. Pinstripes were cool when you were in eighth grade at the school dance thinking it was cool because Ska was doing it. Fuck that.

how about something with vertical thin striping?

If it's going to be your only suit in the wardrobe just go for a simple black  or grey. I'm no expert, but I'll tell ya that you can wear a grey suit to most any occasion and it'll work out in your favor. Dark blue also works but can be even a bit too fancy in some places.

I want it to be black... or dark blue... dark blue would be neat.

But I don't want it to be standard simple boring crap. I want it to be different from the other 9000 people at the wedding I'm having to go to.

They'll know a fuckton more about picking the right suit for you than any of us combined. Tell them what you're telling us. I got my suit from them, and I had a similar idea. Something different, something fun, something that fit comfortably.

Though the thing with the sleeves is normal. It's supposed to let the shirt underneath pop out. Got a watch? That's a suit accessory too. See if you can get a shirt with french cuffs, as these requires cufflinks, which can add a very cool accent to something as simply as a shirt-cuff.

Which reminds me:

Cufflinks are for french cuffs, whoever asked that. They don't have buttons on the cuff, you're supposed to use the cufflink to close it.

Christ I can't believe I asked you for advice on a tie.

Anyhow the best kind of blue to get is a dark navy blue. It works well with pretty much anything and is very stylish. While pronounced pinstripes make you look like a tool, more subtle pinstripes really make you look classy without being too obnoxious about it.

As for fitting you should go to a place where they actually fit the suit to you. Not just some buy it and bag it suit store. If you ever want to drive up to Canadia, Moore's Clothing for Men offers outstanding suits at great prices and they even actively fit the suit to you.

Here's a picture of one of my suits for reference. I picked this baby up in Europe but the colour scheme is what I think you're looking for. I had my lamp shining down to provide better lighting so its not as blue as it looks.

I'm the leetest one here

I use Men's Wearhouse.  Good selection, price, and they will fit and alter the suit to look good on you.  You can get anything from a board-room business suit to a Jones New York velvet houndstooth tuxedo.  They also have a 2 for 1 deal so you don't have to look the same every day.

This is all good advice....basically just go to a respectable men's clothing store and they will take care of you.  I go to Bachrach most often.

If you are going to drop 300-600 on a suit and don't plan on building a wardrobe...I would make my first suit dark gray, charcoal, or dark blue.  These colors are most useful for wearing the suit to the most occassions (interviews, formal dining, work, etc).  Do not buy a brown suit.  Avoid a straight black on your first go around....black suits are for bouncers, funerals, and salespeople.  Wear a black suit during the day and people think you are an mortuary guy, or a guy who has an unhealthy relationship with the movie men in black.

Striping is up to you.

Charcoal is your best bet if you plan on having only one suit.

I am very pissed off right now. Last night I wrote a very long reply in this thread and could not post it because the forum software was all fucked up. I went to bed crying.

I've bought a suit there before and it worked out very well. It looks great and feels great. Not only that, they're well priced and I'm sure you could get a killer deal right now. Don't forget, the worst thing about a cheap suit is having it feel like a cheap suit. Mens Warehouse feels quality and you can get it tailored to your fit.

I would go charcoal because it's more universal, get a white shirt and a blue shirt and go from there. Buy your tie from somewhere else, but make sure it's not one of those shitty looking generic Macy's ties, I hate those.

Mens Wearhouse does not sell nice suits. They sell over priced glued together crap. I agree you can get a decent looking suit there, and relative to so much other crap out there it seems like you got something good, but the reality is that mens wearhouse is to suits what mcdonalds is to real food. If you're in a hurry then sure, go for it, I had to do that once and got a fairly decent suit. If you're not a in hurry then you can do so much better.

Oh, I'm not denying the fact that MW is the fast food of suits. I'm assuming Whut just needs something decent that he'll use a couple of times..in which case the store would work well. If he wants top notch, he'll have to pay for it. Personally, I'm a Brooks Brothers guy.

So in case anyone cares... here's what I went with:

gogo cell phone myspace mirror shot.

Wedding reception went well. Was a little drunk by this point. Thanks for all of the advice.
