Synths? Options

I am looking to buy my first synthesizer and was wondering if any of you have any good suggestions.
About $500 + or - and will make crazy techno sounds.
I've looked at the "Roland Sh-201" and though hey that would pretty nice, but are there other synths similar or better than this i should take a look at?
i don't know synths very well just love the electronic sounds that can be made using synths, so any help provided will be greatly appreciated.

If you can get your hands on a moog, that'll give you some of the meatiest sounds on the market. outside of that, i'd also recommend a nord synth or 303.

Once you've got a mainstay synth, and you've got a hundred bucks left over, pick up a thingamagoop ( i'd link to it, but forums - broken - yeah jfgi). it's a synthesizer based on light and makes all sorts of quirky, beeps and boops and SQUERRR sounds.
