October 9th Update
OMFG...

I'm pissed~...genuinely so.

Okay, so few hours ago, I woke up fairly lazy eyed. Not terribly so, but in a chill, not-taking-the-world-too-seriously mood. I get on the forums, I realize I have one these updates to do, and I go on to write one up (which should have been this update). I spend 2 hours working on an update focused on dynamic content generation in VHEL and a newer concept called anamorphic design -- think, revolutionary game conception that focuses heavily on player involvement, stress augmentation, and dynamic content generation created by a game, fueled by the way the player interacts within the gameplay (think L4D and Garry's Mod on crack, and with a point).

...In less than 0.5 seconds, I lost the entire post...

I...am...freakin'...pissed.

I practically ranted to myself for 30 minutes, with my dog looking at me like a crazy person, arguing how I completely shot myself in the foot by not saving a copy of that update, which clearly stated what needed to be done to create player defined experiences that never loss their fun even after decades! I FUCKED UP! *sigh*

I still remember a bit of what I wrote up and how to create an anamorphic game, but...*sigh*...you people see how much I write up daily. Would you want to redo a post the length of a 2 page article? No, you don't. Shut up, you don't, even if you said "yes". I'm simply pissed. RAAAAAAAAWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Happier things going on.

Blah. Just read.

I want my animation system finished so badly. Must I really wait for the UI?*

- A few new auditions for VHEL came in. One was from Kelsey, who did two roles. I've been told not to share the auditions with the public. Sorry. D=

- Development is in standstill. There's a lot of work left, and right now, I'm prioritizing what's more important to streamline development. Yes, I am making cuts. Where at you ask? Well...some of the story segments ><. No worries. We're creating functions within the engine to allow us add more to the game even after release. Am I talking about DLC indirectly? Yes, I am, but I won't say what kind, right now, or even the content that is being cut and put back in later.

- VHEL's new Mod DB page will be coming soon. I'm collaborating with the guys behind Overgrowth to refurbish the page and content.

- There's been a sudden change up in some of the gameplay mechanics in the game (deals with the way you play after while). It took me a minute to realize the issues in-game, but they're being fixed now. Were these serious issues? Somewhat. I nearly broke my own game. XD

- Boardgames and auction features?

- The difficulty settings I mentioned the other week are being beefed up a bit........a lot, actually. There was a decision to enhance the difficulty and make the game either enthralling and seamless, or masochistically tough and deep. The time constraint system I ousted months ago is back along with Game Over sequences....on Demon mode, that is. For the other two modes (though both might end up being fused together towards the end of development), there will be no time constraints, no Game Overs, and less frustration as far as everything else is concerned.

My reasons? Some people want to enjoy the game for the story, take their time, and not have to go through hell to enjoy every moment possible. Others, like me, want to feel like I can invest 40+ hours of playtime over, and over again, with the game being tougher and much more anamorphic the longer I play. In short: Demon mode is for people who want to feel a great sense of achievement and fun, while Acolyte and Novice are for people just getting started and want to have a relaxing experience. The skill gap is steep! Hard is HARD and easy is meh, so don't take this stuff like when the open Beta comes out.

Still pissed, but okay

I'm out. I know this update is a bit underwhelming, but I'm extremely busy right now. Once I get some of this planning stuff out the way, I'll get some of my art out or whatever and go nuts next update. =P

12 I took an hour or two to read through all of your stuff all over the internets and am amazed. Wow! You are an amazing person and your drive to do something that you love is insane. Take this all the way through and win! Game development has been a great interest to me for many years although i lack every possible applicable skill :( FTW!

WTF? You are taking auditions and didn't ask me?

You are no longer my favorite number, 12. No longer my favorite number.

D=

There I go pissing off Mrs.C without even knowing it.

I didn't ask for an audition from you because...I already knew you would give me one? Yeah...see....it all worked out after all. I had you in the pocket wayyyy before auditions were even given the go. I can still be your favorite number because I was thinking about you all along. =D

Really though, if you'd like to audition -- and I'm sorry for not asking you directly before -- go for it. I'm desperate for older woman at this point (God, that sounds wrong right now). I needz people who are willing to embarrass themselves on a mic while trying to read dialogue that feels like it was thrown into a blender full of cajun and kiwi dialects, and sound convincing, without feeling like the roles available seem like the embodiment of my self conscious on overload. =P

Thanks, silverwasp!

My secret to success: Blueberry muffins and cookie dough ice cream. Pie, as well, sometimes (See Mrs.C! Pie is something that drives me! I am so not forgetting about you here!).

My serious reason for driving myself through hell and back for this project: Remember those Gi Joe moral lessons at the end of the show? "Now you know, because knowing is half the battle -- G-I-JOE!"? Well, consider my effort to try so hard kind of like the deliverance of a message...but without some kind of humanitarian group requesting I do so in some contradictory fashion. That's all I'll say for right now about it. =P

Okay, teacher person, give me an audition. Personally, I think you'd do well as someone like Iberian. I need a voice for her that's assertive and mature...as like your voice, which is interesting that I'm just now realizing this. Actually, I would be honored if you gave her a shot first since, well, I don't have anyone else trying the harder stuff out...yet.

So, since I'm old and you're desperate, you'll give me a shot.

Thanks.

I don't do accents (unless you need southern or midwestern - which, according to your descriptions, you don't).

That's not what I meant. ><

You're offering, and I don't want to skip on that offer. You're not old and unwanted, and my saying "desperate" isn't in relation to you being a last resort of some such. That's the wrong kind of idea I'm trying to put into your head. Thi-.....hmmm...no...no, I see what you're doing here. The more I talk, the stupider you make me sound. Yes...I see this now.

Any who, you don't need to worry about the accents. Forget about the kiwi. I can do without it. Iberian lacks much of an accent anyways, outside of saying various words with a particular emphasis, so it's a fairly easier role to get into compared to the others. Here's the catch: it's a wordy part, but it's...well...if I had to describe her dialogue, it's virtually you....which scares me. It should be a natural fit.

October 23rd Update
Have it your way

Alot on my plate

I'm sorry about not getting up an update last Friday, folks. I got caught up with VHEL auditions and a few other things. Good news is that I finally found Iberian's voice actor! Yay! It'll take a minute for her (Mrs. C) to break into character, but once she's in it, I don't think anyone will want her replaced.

Any who, we're currently working on the underlining design and code for VHEL. Most of it is just about done. It feels like nothing's really changed for the longest this year, but then I notice all these obscure notes about something we've accomplished some 4 or 5 months ago, or the like. In either case, "something" is being done. XD

Since I have everyone's attention now, I'll go ahead and talk about some of the generic game modes in VHEL. These will be standard and will likely appear in the next game, VHEL - Reaver.

Story Mode

(name in debate)

VHEL is largely a linear story told in the form of contracts and intermissions. Contracts are like missions in which you need to achieve a specific goal for a client. Intermissions are simply moments where you're not burdened by some responsibility given by the game.

There are 12 contracts in all in story mode. Each contract usually takes place in a new location, giving you one of several characters to work with along with Khana (she is the MC afterall). For example: you may be doing the Myda Ru contract, and have a courier team made up of Khana and Nolan. Sometimes, but rarely, you'll be able to switch up your team with other characters on standby during contracts.

Conquest Mode

(name in debate)

Unlike Story Mode, Conquest mode is 100% player defined and player dependent. Contracts and environments are dynamically generated, timelines are automatically established, and destinations are chosen by the game randomly. Here, your grand objective is to get the best possible score -- or "notoriety"-- possible, while completing varying objectives. The bigger your notoriety, the more tools and perks you'll have at your disposable.

In addition to all this, the game will also dynamically scale enemy sets the more you progress. This means that enemies that you encounter will also change and evolve; Ivarian Ragnic, Marauders, Scouts, Anubis Scouts, Darmun Ragnic, and even the legendary Reavers themselves -- they're all coming out of the woodwork to send a message -- one entailing your death.

There are some interesting features to Conquest beyond all the difficulty tweaks. Most of the characters within the game will be playable to make up your courier team. Yes, you can have a team without Khana in it, for once. Want Page and Nolan to duke things out for a bit? Do it -- the option will be there along with several other characters, and a few hidden ones, to choose from. You'll have options to select your own courier/marauder logo as well, along with set perks, and a truck load of other settings still being looked into.

Lastly, Conquest Mode, by default, has a game over sequence. Internally, we're calling Conquest mode "Old Skool mode" since the game is almost literally 5 times harder. Enable Demon difficulty and you'll be hard pressed to survive through one contract, let alone several. Believe me when I say this mode will be HARD. Tiji and I love games that are ruthlessly difficult...and we will make this mode near impossible to beat for the lighthearted, rookie couriers out there.

Bestiary Mode

A giant collection of information about Nor Prime and the game in general -- that simple. The Bestiary will include EVERYTHING I've slaved over for the past 7 years. My entire gallery of art related to VHEL, every single piece of information about the characters and the world, the entire script, design notes, the VHEL ost -- literally a vault of content that has amassed over the years, now being presented in the form of a giant compendium. You won't get EVERYTHING at first -- you'll have to unlock a bit of it through Conquest and Story mode. The most promising elements relate to the Reavers. "That" content basically would give away some of the tid bits related to VHEL - Reaver, if you wanted to get a jump start on what the next game will be like.

We needz help!!!111!!

If you're an artist -- a good one -- don't be afraid to ask to help out with this great project. We're on the verge of syncing in the art with the gameplay and the rest of the tech, and we seriously need more artist on board. Sure, I can handle most of it, but I'm just one person. So if you think you can handle the workload and be a vital part of the team, don't be afraid to ask.

Cya!

I'm gone. I have a storyline script to finish up before November (wayyyy too much to finish up before November ends).

November 5th Update
Jesus fuckin' christ -- epic wall-o-text

Sorry AGAIN for missing last weeks update. I simply had no time on my hands to deliver an update. Luckily, you're all getting twice the serving this time around along with goodies you may enjoy.

The life of a courier is complicated...

Many of you are still wondering what kind of storytelling is in VHEL - Courier. "Is it classic Sci-Fi?", "Is it fantasy?", "Is there a lot of redundant Anime/RPG jargon?", etc., etc..

The answer to the above questions: "No", "No", and "God, no". Think of the VHEL - Courier as a murder mystery engulfed in it's own science and ideology. When you're talking about a world that's almost literally 100% run by it's peoples' status and notoriety, it's not hard to imagine syndication wars and double crossing to get to the top -- this is on any front in Nor Prime, even on the brothel level.

As far as story events -- and this is just me skimming the surface of a lot of stuff that goes down -- the story arc follows Khana Faust in her life in Nor Prime after a significant revolution in the world; the fall of the Reaver Society (R.E. - Reaver Epoch era) and the years after it (A.R. - After Reaver era).

In the beginning of the game, we find Khana and Nolan in a bit of depressive slump after only realizing that their company, Faust Courier, is in the midst of a notoriety struggle (a struggle to keep respect, so to speak). It's main chieftain, Mace Faust, has all but run out of couriers to help stabilize Faust Courer within the Trade. For him, he wants to insure that his company can last even longer without his couriers dying off left and right. With Khana and Nolan being the last of what he has, he looks into help from a Bhacrio Juun gambler, Don Tokun; a long time friend and business partner of Mace's. Don's noteworthy connections within the Trade help land the company a special donor by the name Ruj Black (a company), a type of illegal arms manufacturer on the outskirts of Ivara near Jin Yhat.

Skipping ahead several moons later, we find the chancellor of West EDOC, Orin Reynoldia (Casie's and Floressia's father), dead from unknown causes. His death soon elevates the level of security in and around southern Ivara to new heights. In the world of Nor Prime, especially in southern Ivara and Darmus, whatever seems accidental, isn't. No sooner afterward, North EDOC's chancellor also falls victim to an unexplained death. Many people within this short period of time begin to talk about a possible extremist group hoping to crippling the remains of the great EDOC syndication. The many heretics on everyone's minds: possible Ban'Tien survivors, biomurrologist from the long since rumored Clandestine faction, heretics from within the Trade, and even former Reavers from the Reaver Society itself.

Yes, both the courier company situation with Khana and the deaths of the chancellors of EDOC are connected, but probably not in the ways you may think at first based upon all I've written right here. You have to remember, this isn't a story the about good guys beating the bad guys. Quite honestly, I feel more like the story is a look at all the bad situations created by the Reaver Society back when Nila Faust, Floressia Reynoldia, and Kender Seth were in charge it before it dipped into obscurity, and how they're still trying to do things their own selfish way -- dead or not.

...And in case you wanted to know what the script looked like...

Iberian
"Hello everyone. I hope you all have been fine this good day."

Nolan
"Decent."

Khana
"Can‘t complain."

Mace
"Aye."

>Iberian takes a second to look at her cast of characters: her couriers, and her co-founder. She has a determined look on her face.

Iberian
"Ahem, so to my understanding, our company is now on the verge of isolation. We’re down a courier, we’re out of donors, our Darmus branch isn’t fairing too well, and we aren’t bringing in the same amount of resources we once were. Once we’re in full isolation, this company won‘t be able to sustain itself in the Trade, therefore destroying our own personal values in EDOC and elsewhere where prestige determines our own wealth, etc., etc.. I don‘t know about you folks, but now is the time to put on your game faces and hope to God we don’t fail."

Nolan
"Agreed."

Khana
"With ya."

Mace
"Aye."

Iberian
"I have a few ideas I wish to present, but first, I‘d like to know what you all think. [turns to Nolan] Nolan, seeing, as how you’re the one who handles most of the business around here, as well as being the only Humari in my company-...[chuckles] ignore my smile, I’m trying not to laugh on the inside...okay...would you mind being the first to give your opinion?"

Nolan
"Heh…sure. We‘ve had a few solid couriers come into Faust Courier since I‘ve been here. I don’t need to point out the ones who didn’t make it since they‘re either dead or some other place -- doesn‘t matter really. Either case, my opinion: we should probably find some new recruits. We ain‘t gonna get much done with just the four of us, that much I know."

Mace
"Same with gettin’ donors, yah?"

Nolan
"Good donors. I’ve had enough of Ruj Black‘s crap."

Iberian
"Aye. Do you have anything to add, Khana?"

Khana
"Nope."

Iberian
"Anything informative?"

Khana
"Nope."

Iberian
"Even if it‘s criticism?"

Khana
"Nope."

Iberian
"Destructive criticism?"

Khana
"Nolan could be a better courier if he didn‘t always try and take shortcuts all the damn time, yah?"

Nolan
"Who are ya tryin‘ to start stuff with, minga?!"

Iberian
" - Alright, alright. At least we’re all in the right spirit for the job. As far as my proposal goes, I’d like us to pursue more couriers, like Nolan mentioned before. We‘ll move on to new donors once we have a team ready."

Mace
"No other plan?"

Iberian
"Not with our notoriety. There‘s too much unwavering trust within our clients to make any bold moves we can‘t support."

Mace
"Humph…"

Iberian
"What? The problem is solved. We find new couriers, then we move on."

Mace
"Don‘s boy dies and the next thing ya wanna do is find a lad to replace ‘em? See less point in gettin‘ fresh meat when we could just go for the prize right now."

Iberian
"As in…?"

Mace
" - Let‘s find a brand new donor and fix up all the confusion behind recruits and whatnot later."

Khana
"That‘s the Ban‘Tien way of thinkin‘, if I didn‘t know any better."

Iberian
"It‘s also the ignorant way of doing things."

Everything else going on

Just read the following:

* Tiji finally got his hands on the full Master Design Document to VHEL. Yes, this is actually important to mention because out of every other person alive, he's the only one with the original copy outside of myself. That's several hundred pages of coding you'll have to go through, buddy. =D

* Though art has been coming out slower than normal, several new characters are currently being finished up: Flo Kor'Normah, Don Tokun, and a few brothel whores.......yes, brothel whores

* If I'm not mistaken, Tiji is establishing all the in-game variables (system intergers, arrays, magic numbers -- whatever you want to call them). This isn't effecting some of the other work already finished up like the animation system or our loading systems...which, by the way, is pretty memory friendly now. =D

* The Master Story Script is 2 weeks away from being done (if I'm reviewing it right). When it is, I'll print the whole thing up, take pictures of it, and act like I've just created the Bible. If a tear rolls down my cheek, I'll make sure to take a picture of that, too!

* Voice acting sessions have been on the way for the past 2 months now and on November 20th, the roles for Khana, Casie, Nolan, Iberian, Mace, and Page (maybe), will be closed. If you're interested in doing voice over work, by all means, be my guess....but do it soon, because auditions won't be going on forever. =/

And that's that!

Ciao, everybody!
