Story follows cable/broadband providers wanting to switch to a metered pricing model where you pay for a certain bandwidth allowance per month, and then are charged greiviously for anything you go over. Think cell phone minutes plans back in the mid-ninety's

The Story is here.

The idea of wanting to play TF at teh end of the month, but being able too because I am out of bandwidth from watching some HD youtube videos sucks.

Bandwidth is like current, or volume flow rate. You don't "run out" of bandwidth. You can use up to a max amount of bandwidth at a given time.

So do they mean they're limiting the amount of data you can download in a month? That's fucking stupid. I really hope that never happens.

The internet is among the few things I don't think companies need to be fucking up. It goes without saying I am strongly in favor of network neutrality, which contradicts many beliefs I have as a libertarian, but seriously. The internet is great as it is. I really hope comcast doesn't gay it up with this bullshit.

Welcome to the UK.

I have to pay £1 ($2) per 1GB. Orange Box costs £20 ($40) to download (20GB)

Yeah sorry Im at work and my thought was interrupted. I was going to say that I would be upset if I wanted to play TF2 but was out of transfer capacity because I forgot and some high bandwidth HD youtube video(s) soaked up my transfer.

I have heard Terminator bitch before about how he was out of transfer bytes or whatever for this month or that...and at the time i thanked god we didnt have a system like that.

Okay, I officially feel old. *stoops over, pulls glasses down to tip of nose and starts shaking and incessantly licking his lips* Sonny, I remember when they charged for how much TIME you spent connected, back in them thar dial-up days!

This is not new, in fact in many places (such as here in Anchorage, Alaska) you get a monthly data allotment and overage charges if you exceed them. Here there are also higher end packages that offer unlimited download, but they still jump on you if your uploads are excessive.

There's always been a meter on you, it's just a question of how they bill it. In theory, it could even end up costing less per month some people, but probably not anyone reading these forums. :)
