Okay, jokes aside on reformatting, I'm finally going to nuke that old laptop, but I don't know how. The harddrive runs non-stop sometimes and I don't want to look further for viruses or otherwise try to fix it. I've pulled the files I want out of it and just want to start over.
So, the question I have is should I "F-Disk" it or use the system restore option from the hidden partition on the harddrive, or some other process? And how do I accomplish that? I don't know if I have the original disks that came with the machine, if any. Yes, I'm a nub. You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." OK Cantrip I'm gonna go easy on you and just *snicker* try not to laugh...j/k No really it's best to insert your Windows CD and start over....because system restore only goes back so far and if you had problems then youll have problems now...... The thing is your saying you don't know where your CD is and that is key to starting fresh and speaking of key if you have the # instead that you used to register Windows then get ahold of Windows Support they should allow you to do this providing you at least have the # cause it proves you own a legit copy.......BUT if you do find that CD before you insert it go into your BIOS and make sure your Laptop boots from the CD ...it should boot from your Hard Drive all the time but when you do stuff like starting over you need to make sure it boots from the CD (oops already said that :)) Now the way you go into BIOS is pressing Delete BEFORE Windows boots up...just press it Delete and if you get it right a Blue screen will come up w/ various info about your Laptop ....you will not be able to manuver w/ the mouse so only use the Keyboard.....at the very top there are titles so look for the one w/ BOOT ORDER if it already sez boot from CD then everything is 5X5 (kool) so just press exit and insert the CD.......make sure when it ask you how you want to setup your Hard Drive partitan that you set it to NTFS...NOT FAT32!!!!! It will also ask if you want to do it Quick and thats OK go w/ that.......enjoy watching Windows do its magic *cough* go get yourself something to drink cause it may take a bit .....20 mins in most cases........lemme know how it went...... PS: you might just try going into the Control Panel and remove all the Programs you don't use anymore....it frees up HD space....... PSS: Plz go DL that Tweakguide I keep telling everybody about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! www.tweakguides.comPSS: remember that you should ALWAYS defrg your HD when a big game like HL2 is installed even w/ the NTFS patition I still do it at least once a week and it keeps it nice n tight *smile*

Haven't been able to find the orginal disks yet. Not sure they ever existed. I went onto IBM's website for recovery discs. This is what they say about it for my machine:

Well basically this is gonna start you over from scratch so yes and no should answer that question....I say no cause Windows CD will not have ANYTHING installed BUT Windows.......while that process your going to go thru will start you over BUT install ALSO some other bs like "bloatware"........but at least you can start over...just go to START/settings/Control Panel/addandremove/ then remove what you dont want anymore......hope you have a printer so you can copy those instructions!!! if you don't then sit down grab a pen and paper and have at it cause your going to need to know what to do step-by-step.....grab a cold one*

Yeah absolutely.......the thing is, that if you don't know much about PC's your liable to screw it up again......sad to say but true. You should definately have Anti-Virus protection and some sort of Adware protection too.....thing is that companies like Norton and McAfee take TOO MUCH control of your PC and in my opinion are too intrusive......Now it might sound like I'm saying don't buy those....on the contrary they do the job BUT when you game you should turn them off and use the least amount of processes you can.....remember that the CPU can get a definate boost by not having to deal w/ something that isn't needed ATM such as Gaming....you'll never get a Virus Gaming so turn it off.....now some people even turn off the firewall but I don't ....I leave that on......anyways I have about 20 processes running when I game and hardly ever lag......at least I know the CPU isnt wasting time on stuff I dont need and can focus on runnin my games you know???
