so recently I've been vainly trying to get myself fit, I wouldnt consider myself obese but could stand to lose a little weight. Anyways I started doing sit ups, about 3-4 sets of 10 a day. Now I'm pretty sure I'm overdoing it as a beginner because my abdomen is always killing me in the morning, about how many do you think I should start at or what other exercises would you recommend to somebody cooped up in their apartment

For me crunches have always been more effect than sit ups. Your main thing is to watch what you eat. Limit the bad carbs to a bare minimum. Some type of cardio is also a must.
Some people say to do your cardio and ab work before breakfast. I am lazy so I have never tried that.

Crunches should be done initially at about 3 sets of 20 every other day. Abs are muscles and it is possible to over train them which will be counter productive. Every other day should be the most frequent you train them. Be consistent and you will see results.

Cardio is actually way more important than crunches/sit-ups. Try to run or bike every day.

I'd join you, but my schedule is bullshit this quarter.

This be the truth, sit-ups and crunches will get your abdominal muscles working, but the problem you seem to be trying to solve is excess body fat. Your workout will get you toned abs, but you'll still have that layer of fat over those fine abs :D. As an exercise sci/physical therapy major, I'd recommend you do some cardio (as Lead said) as many days a week as you can, along with ab exercises, one of my professors actually wrote a paper on how it could be a good idea to treat your ab muscles like you would any other muscles you wanna train, so why not try doing some weight training with those abs along with your running/biking? weighted crunches in the form of 3-4 sets 10-12 reps would be key, but go for a run! :)
(also try cutting out some calories for quicker results, taking out 1 can of pop a day could lead to a loss of ~1lb of weight a week (assuming a can of pop ~180-200 calories).

This might be another forum place to say I've seen research being done on diet drinks i.e. diet coke, or other foods with aspartane or other 0 calorie sugar subs and it seems that while they don't contain calories, they also don't engage the bodies response to calories, so the body while not taking in calories at the time, will not increase its metabolism even when calories are then introduced to the body... you may be better off with a coke over a diet coke [but if you can rid yourself of both you're in business :)]

Yep, increasing your cardio and your lifting will get you dropping weight. It takes a lot of calories to pump your guns, so if you don't want to max out, just do some moderate lifting along with cardio and you'll be fine. Just remember not to go overboard too fast. It's not gonna happen overnight and as long as you're consistent, you'll be good to go for the summer. :D

As for crystal light, if it gets you drinking more water and less crap, go for it.

Ill put this easymode.
- Alternate full body Cardio-intensive workout (60minutes) every other day. On off-cardio days do about 15 minutes of crunch/ab work (i do it after weight training, and my fitness plan has 325 reps...."i hate it, but I love it" - TH he is afucking crazy basterd.). Don't work the abs everyday.

I work out six days a week alternating weight training with cardio/yoga/kenpo. It takes commitment, but it works.

Not bad, but do you have the tools to work more than just your abs every other day? You could go get resistance bands from Target or something and work your arms and legs as well. They're small and portable and easy to use in a small space. Your body burns more fat (because you boost your metabolism) with resistance training.

Also, I know someone else said it already but it is very much worth repeating..... you can do ALL the ab exercises in the world and it wouldn't amount to shit if you don't cut the crap from your diet (or at least eat within moderation a couple times a week). You'll have killer abs covered by a layer of fat. And then what would be the point of all that hard work?!? :)

I'm currently kicking ass and taking names on the P90X workout program (as is Giller)... and I LOVE it (even though I curse it when I'm doing it!)!!

you can get some good ones and won't have to worry about that. As long as you aren't trying to see how far you can stretch them, you will be fine.

Yeah, you should be ok... :) I haven't googled the incident rate on that happening to other people but I think it's fairly minimal if used correctly!

Ok so just recently made a few changes in my diet, I have been drinking a lot more water and eating more fruit (mainly apples grapes and bananas), I still have a soda now and again, just not so much. I've also tried that vitamin water when looking for something with flavor instead of plain old boring water. I'm eating letting less junk foods and more whole grains, and if I am looking for a snack I usually have some like sunchips or a fat/sugar free snack of some kind. Not sure how I can switch up lunch and dinner, usually I have some ham (plain) or pb sandwiches for lunch, and dinner consists of a meat entree thats either baked or foreman grilled with a vegetable side (corn, peas, carrots, or a baked potato (lightly buttered)). I'm a really picky eater and dont really dress up my foods, I hate salads, so yeah. Also been looking up some resistance bands and not sure what I'm looking for, and what kind of exercises can I do with them?
