I can rent it to you for $300 + utilities. I was aiming toward $500 at minimum, due to the square footage, but anything is better than nothing. However, once you get on your feet we'll need to negotiate. Wired for power. No insulation and no plumbing... however, it comes with its own private fridge and direct access to the best yard ever. So... yeah. I was planning on insulating it this summer but that's not practical right now for me. Utilities are split evenly. I don't tolerate that whole "you used this much water on this day" argument. You live here, you pay your share of what it takes to run this fucking awesome place. Bills tend to alternate. Every other month it's super cheap... and then it's super expensive, as the power and water bills come every other month. Cable is included, meaning I pay for that to keep the bills down. So, it's your call. I am very flexible, as the other roommates will tell you (if you ask), but I can't sit on my hands for a month if you can't pay the bills. So, if you're cool with $300 + utilities (and the utilities do vary, so I can't give you a standard), then fine. When do you want to move in?

The whole taxes are theft argument is kind of funny, property rights absolutists in general are amusing. If it helps, think of taxes as the service fee for civilization. I am happy that my taxes contributed an infinitesimal fraction of a penny to the $1800 you were awarded, spend it wisely! Gimme a break, since when is taking someone's money by saying "Pay up, or else..." OK just because it's a huge federal bureaucracy and not a guy on the street. Both deprive me of something I've earned and have a right to by someone else who thinks he has more of a right to it. That said, take the grant. Act in your own self interest, even if the system's too stupid to know you don't need it anymore. HolyJaw wrote:In the end, everything Endyss said.

You are atleast exchanging it for a package of services. I think in most cases it is a good bargain. There are probably a lot of services each of us could outline as unnecessary and trivial to our own personal ends, but any cost saving program in favor of purchasing the individual service a la carte would probably not save us anymoney because of the additional administrative costs necessary by the service providers to determine who has paid thier subscription fee's. Not to mention the legal costs that would arise from disparities in levels of service (ex. My neighborhood is really unsafe because everybody else buys the cheap, shitty police force, while I am the only one shelling out for a decent cop), Collection on public works, etc. Quote:

I don't agree with Endyss either (who unfortunately seems to be channeling Rand). Property is theft! Or more realistically, what you earned would not be possible without government because without government property does not exist. Government is (theoretically) an expression of the will of those governed by it, government says you have to hand over a bit of what you earned to keep the system working then that's how it is. Of course we know that the government does a lot of shit it shouldn't do and that American democracy is extremely dysfunctional, so it's not like it's unreasonable to bitch about taxes being too high or wasted on dumb shit but I do think it is unreasonable to say that taxes are theft. It's simplistic because it was propaganda. I don't disagree with you in your broader view. But because this is an influential quote, the purpose is making a case for the distinction of a community of people (with thier values, culture, etc), from a government system. Another way of convincing people that they have no connection to the british government, and to see themselves as an independant people. I wonder if Paine really even believed what he was writing completely...or if it just made for a better sale for revolutionary ideas. Quote:
