Shitheads rig the election. People get angry.Regardless of whether Ahmadinejad holds on to power through this it proves pretty conclusively that it would be wrong to start a war with Iran. They have people there who give a shit about freedom and are willing to take it to the streets. War is only going to weaken them and empower the Iranian right. This should come as no surprise. The common perception of Iranians by Americans is really fuckin wrong.

That's video from a little while ago. There is an illegal protest of hundreds of thousands of people going on and they are all chanting death to dictators, death to corrupt government. I imagine that makes dictators and the corrupt a bit uncomfortable. Most accounts now are that the city cops aren't even trying anymore, they just let the protesters take over the streets. Various other police and paramilitary groups are still fighting though, including at least one group that the AP witnessed shooting into the crowd of protesters. There is some really crazy shit going down in Iran right now. Considering the history there, the odds are good there will be a massive crackdown in the very near future. Or there could be another revolution, or some kind of civil war. Or, the corrupt dictators could back down. That's not how they usually behave though. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

I agree with you, and the same is true for most countries that we deal with, china for instance. The only exception would possibly be North Korea, but then the government has been brainwashing its people for several generations now.

This is what democracy looks like?? Gimme a break. This is what theocracy looks like! These people are rioting because of a possibly probably rigged election, but any candidates still have to meet with the mullahs' theocratic approval. They called it a step forward in women's rights that they were for the first time allowed to attempt to run for the office. But oh! Wouldn't you know it? Apparently not a single one was qualified. If all of this really was about freedom, they'd have something akin to the French Revolution, overthrow Ayatollah Khamenei and his ilk, and establish a true representative democracy. You want religion to be an enshrined part of your government? Fine, write a constitution that requires adherence to a specific interpretation of the Quran and allow the people to truly vote for candidates they want. And when America was founded, only rich, white, educated, land owning men could vote. Don't be a naysayer, the people of Iran are taking an important step in the fact that the people are taking a stand and letting their voices be heard by those in power. That is the beginnings, or rather the core foundation of what democracy is. And it is working as the Supreme Leader has issued an order to investigate the election. No one is claiming that the Irianian political system is democratic, but these events, and these images, are truely the face of democracy.

It's rather telling that a turnout of this size supposedly "lost" a democratic election. That's half the fucking country. Or looks like it. Safety + Peace

And the investigative team assembled never published any thoughts or conclusions or evidence. They basically said "yeah we looked into it" Its all good. They are buying time for the intensity to die down the the people to loose interest and go back to business as usual. Quote:

It is a democratic theocracy, or at least it was on paper. The middle east has a long tradition of sham elections, Saddam used to win in Iraq with like 99% of the vote every couple years. Post-revolution Iran has had at least a more convincing illusion of democratic processes, even if the religious nuts could ultimately do whatever they want and often did. Or at least they could until now. There really isn't any telling where this will lead, there are certainly elements trying to turn it against the state in general so this could ultimately be your 21st century French Revolution. Regardless, go look at what's up with the reform movement in Iran these days. It's not just the kids anymore. They've taken what would of been a normal shady election in which the Ayatollahs currently favored politician wins and turned it into the biggest existential crisis Iranian theocracy has faced since the revolution. There are hundreds of thousands of Iranian kids plugged into global culture and they want to take the rest of Iran with them and they are apparently not afraid to get bloody trying. That's about as close to democracy as you'll find in Iran, so yes "this is what democracy looks like". Pissed off people in the streets demanding that their votes be counted and chanting death to the dictator is the embodiment of democracy. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.
