Yesterday on the drive home from work I was pulled over. I had just gotten on the freeway when I saw him come flying up behind me and then slow down. For about 5 minutes he matched my speed in the passing lane about two car lengths behind me. I was matching the guy in front of me, we ranged from under 60 to 65 max. After about 5 minutes he closed in and changed lanes. It wasn't quite tailgating but it sure was close. For 5 minutes we cruised along this way. The guy in front of me never going over 65, the cop on my ass. Finally he turned on his lights. It was kind of a relief. I have a broken side mirror still (I sort of like it broken for various reasons), I figured I'd get told to get it fixed and be sent on my way. So, onto the side of the freeway we go. I start getting everything out so he won't even get say to "your papers please!". Roll down my window as he walks up, I'm as happy as can be. Really I found the whole situation interesting since it's not the kind of thing that happens every day and I expected a "warning". I wasn't in a hurry so sitting in my car on the side of the freeway for awhile wasn't a big deal.
The cop was not the most unfriendly I've dealt with, but considering that I was totally cooperative and friendly, polite the entire time, and made a point of keeping my hands always visible...
He still qualifies as just another pig in my book. My favorite was how he kept calling me "boy" like this was the South or some shit. I found it more amusing than demeaning, but that sure seemed like the intent considering his tone and body language.
I didn't ask him why he pulled me over, I handed over my papers and answered his questions. He took my papers back to his car...

I looked through the CDs I found in my glovebox, I'd forgotten I had them in there. I keep my insurance cards when I get a new one so I spent some time looking through those and putting them in chronological order. I browsed the web on my phone...

He comes back, my window is down and my hands are on the steering wheel before he gets there. I'm friendly and polite, he gives me back my papers, he asks some more questions. By this point I am getting very curious why I have been pulled over, he has not mentioned a reason. He hasn't even asked the classic "do you know why" to try to generate self-incrimination. I don't think I've ever not been asked that when stopped by the police. He hands me a ticket for over $200.

It turns out that I had the wrong color sticker on my car. Every 12 months you are supposed to buy a brand new sticker that is a different color than last year's stickers. I'd forgotten and never bought one. It was quite the surprise. The color of the sticker affixed to my license plate is not something I give much thought.

He starts to walk off, I ask him a question and he says "boy, I said read the back of it" and keeps on walking to his car (he was referring to what he said when he handed me the ticket, "read the back of it").

I bought a new sticker for $50 on the interwebs. Funnily enough, had he mentioned it sooner I could of bought the fucking thing right then on the side of the freeway faster than it took him to strap his gun around his fat fucking belly.

Moreover though, it sounds like the cop came from the mid 1900's. Most people aren't on the ball about every little detail in their lives, let alone their tags on their car(s). I'm not saying the ticket wasn't validated, but he was rude to present it to you. He gave you the black man treatment, sir. D=

For real. This wasn't some crazy violation. A warning would have been plenty...

I don't heavily believe in the whole "white cops will always pull over a black man or man who appears to be in some way black" story like it's a fact in this day and age, but it's a horrible belief in the culture still even after the 60's.

I would know...my step dad goes into a full blown frenzy whenever the cops pull him over. >>

Most of the time those are "fix it tickets" Similar to a ticket you would receive if you couldn't show you had auto insurance or had a busted headlight. If you fix the issue within a set time the ticket is waived. So you may actually read the back of the ticket or call and see if this is the case before you get too riled up.

I find it funny that people always believe they should get a warning no matter what the infraction was. Sometimes they are warranted, sometimes not. Depending on the dept its up to the officer.

But really, if all officers hand out warnings for "small infractions" then people wouldn't care at all. They'd just have the mentality of "All I'll get is a warning...."

Maybe that particular officer has a pet-peeve of registration....cause if someone can't be bothered to register their car once every year....maybe they cant be bothered with following other laws

Either way, check the ticket or call...I bet it'll get waived once you provide proof of registration

That's a good idea to look into getting it waived.
I read the back, it appears my choices are pay the fine, or admit guilt but waste time groveling before a judge, or contest it before a judge. I did not purchase their sticker so clearly I "deserved" the fine, until you mentioned getting it waived I had intended to pay. Glad I didn't write the check yet. I have tried the judge route before when a cop pulled me over for "speeding" when it was physically impossible for me to have been unless I floored it, I had just left my house and turned onto the main road which was in school zone mode despite it being still dark because the sun wasnt done rising yet. No one was around. The cop was hiding in the alley that ran behind me house, I saw him before I passed him. If I were to have been going 30 in a school zone I would of slowed down when I saw the cop. Even if I did 30 the whole way through, seriously no one is around. It's fucking sunrise and cold out. The few kids who do walk to school don't leave for another hour at least. I think the cop was just bored and went for it, he was a grumpy ass too).
Anyways, another incident. Pretty sure I posted about it here so search if you're interested.

I've never heard of anyone getting ticketed for expired tabs before, I've asked and thus far I'm 4 for 4 on "yeah they just told me to buy one ASAP".

My brother has gotten pulled over and ticketed for expired tags on his car twice (I made fun of him plenty). He fixed the issues before he went to pay the fine and they knocked it down to like 20 bucks or something completely insignificant. I suggest trying what was mentioned earlier and fixing it then getting it waived or reduced.

I've gotten pulled over once for having expired tags. The worst thing that you can do in the state's eyes is to not pay the state on time. I paid more for that ticket than I did for going 80 in a 50MPH zone.

yea not paying state taxes on vehicles will get you tickets. Usually is you are a month over or something they are alot more likely to just warn you. Bit of you are 3 or more, then you just look like you are trying to screw the state and they bring down the ticket hammer.

This story was anti climatic, very long, and you didn't get tazed in the end.

My parents were three days off for theirs, and the officer told them to just get it taken care of, but I am pretty sure if you are anything over that, they will give you a ticket. I would say giller is right, 3+ months and you will get a ticket, and I think it is deserved, i mean...i am nothing for giving the state of Washington money to waste away on stupid shit, but it is a law.

I've been pulled over by WSP for going 40 in a 35 (i was going 38 and the officer was tail gating me). I think he just did it because i was 17, and it was super bowl night.

A friend of my friends got arrested the other day for a bunch of tickets and fines they refused to pay... or so the story goes.
