I don't know how many linux fags are here, but who here is excited about Ubuntu 9.10? Should be great for all the people with netbooks because the updated kernel doesn't have the crippled intel display drivers that came with 9.4 . There has also been a lot of device support work in the last couple revisions of the kernel. Not to mention the updated Gnome display and all the work put into making it swanky on netbooks.

Come Thursday, my netbook it going to rock 9.10 so hard.

I was actually going to leave this thread alone, not giving a piss about linux.

But the vote of confidence only firms my grip.

Just picked up a second job. Since two 30+hr/week jobs and 15 units means I won't have any free time, I'll be purchasing a Dell Mini 10v for Hackintosh + Ubuntu goodness. Woo Woooooo

Would it be a good idea for me to consider putting this version of Linux on my old PC? Windows virused it all up, but I wouldn't mind wiping the hard drive and installing this. But only if it's the best type of Linux. Discuss.

Might install this on a new partition on my PS3, if I can find a way to access the thing's graphics chip through Linux. I know it used to be possible, but with the new firmware it's probably going to end up as a mess.

IIRC it's not the firmware, it's the hardware. So if it's an old PS3 you should be straight.

Either way, you don't really want Ubuntu on your PS3... you just want Linux on it. I'm not sure you'd really get the full user experience out of it, you know? Ubuntu really works best on machines that you'd use for your normal workflow.

It's an older PS3.

I'm not so much looking for a technological epiphany then a good machine to crunch numbers and maybe getting some use into Wine with. I think it's the firmware that prevents Linux from using the GPU like it would on a normal computer. As far as I remember it used to be possible to do so, but whether the new firmware makes it possible or even harder then previously I don't know.

Its not a bad idea, especially if you aren't doing anything with it. It will defiantly give you some use out of it again. As to which distribution to install, that is really a matter of taste. The distros that I have found favoriable are Ubuntu, Fedora, and openSUSE. Ubuntu is the most popular but Fedora is not far behind.

For newbies I would generally recommend ubuntu because it is designed to be the common man's linux. That is not to say that it is watered down, but the have simply labbled all the buttons and documented what everything does. They also have extensive documentation and getting started instructions that are easy to understand as well as a community that won't just yell RTFM at you if you have a question. That being said, there is a learning curve, but it is not to bad at this point.

Thanks, if I was planning on playing games on it as well, (it has the hardware, don't worry) which distribution would you recommend?

I'd reccommend you don't play anything younger than 3-4 years old because emulating windows games on a linux box is pretty sheisty. That is, unless you like lag, crashing, and shitty graphics.
