So. I've just come into possession of a 5-lb bottle of mercury. What fun things should I do with it? I've already poked it and floated heavy things in a crucible of it. Yes, I'm being careful with it.

Also, to the one moron who will inevitably tell me to drink it: I could. If I drank it, I'd probably be ok. Elemental mercury is pretty much inert in the body, as most heavy metals are. I really wouldn't want to pass it though. D=

I just have to watch out for methyl-mercury. Thats the mega killer. It goes through gloves and stuff, so yeah. :D

Elemental mercury can be absorbed primarily through the respiratory system and its primary toxic effects are on the nervous system. If you plan on goofing around with it, better do it in a ventilated hood bench so you don't inhale the vapors. It can cause brain and nerve damage if you inhale it.

Personally, I'd keep it in a secure container until I could take it to a toxics disposal site and get rid of it.

Yes, that would be the reasonable and smart thing to do. I however, am a fun seeking moron. Its fun to float rocks on it.

Yes Shadow, you would tell me to make a contact explosive. The sad thing is that I'm just missing the ethanol, and we have an ethanol plant just down the road from us. =o

You should hang onto it and continue to play with it for years. Then when you begin to lose your sight and suffer other horrible neurological disorders, you can document your downward spiral for our education and entertainment. Please try and include pictures so that we can have an image record on hand of your degredation.
:)
or you could avoid all that (BORING) and just dispose of it so you dont hurt yourself or others on accident.

Be sure to label the pics so we can tell the difference between the before and after shots.

I can think of a few other fun/beautiful/fascinating and toxic things you could pick up to play with.

1) Phyllobates terribilis , the Golden Poison Frog. Be sure to get an open cut before playing with this one.

2) Micruris Fulvius, the Coral snake. "Red and yellow kill a fellow, Red and black is a friend of Jack"

3) Zigadenus venonosus, The Death Camas. One bulb, raw or cooked can be fatal. often mistaken for wild onion.

4) Takifugu rubripes, The Tiger Blowfish. The most delicious meal you'll never finish. Make sure it is prepared by an inexperienced chef, or better yet DIY.

5) Ethylene glycol, antifreeze. Nice and sweet on the way down.

6) White phosphorus, Willy Pete. Oooh it's so bright and pretty; burns down to the bone.

Any others that you can suggest as playthings for Muff?

I'm hardly one to say no to watching someone do something idiotic (I have pictures and videos to back up this statement, too)

But, seriously, just properly dispose of it. You run the risk of getting other people sick too...

The Cedar River Watershed provides 70% of the drinking water to the greater Seattle area.

Virus is right about the vapors, although mercury does have a high vapor pressure so you should be reasonably safe in a well ventilated area. On a side note I would recommend giving it back to whoever gave it to you. It is a pain to dispose of, and very expensive. I know of a student that attempted to dispose of about 5 lbs of the stuff in a dumpster outside the chem building, needless to say it broke and when the trash man came to pick it up he refused and called the cops/campus police who in turn called environmental health and safety. H&S came in with their moon suits and had to "bag and tag" every item in the dumpster as everything was now considered a hazardous waste. In the end the kid got a ticket and his advising professor had to pay for the decontamination of the mercury.

I hear you can dispose of it safely by feeding it to a dolphin while riding a white whale at 12 noon on a tuesday in a light blue tux.

That what I learned in school.

I mean 8 out of 4 doctors would agree.
