Elephent + Rhino if this is in the right place.
So I'm about 250 right now. I need to be around 215 (for the 6'3" height chart). I've got the exercise down pretty well, doing as much cardio and calisthenics as I can get shoved in. Might try and buy the p90x just for additional stuff.
But here's the sitrep. I eat like, well, crap. I'm working on improving it, currently downing a glass of veggie juice, a can of tuna, and a bag of carrots, but there's more I need to work on obviously. Doing some basic reading, I'm realizing my fiber intake is complete fail. That's what the carrots, triscuits, etc are coming into play for. But:
Any advice on diet? (please specifics, not just "yea, eat healthy numbnuts" <thanks Mrs. C.>)
Ways to get a fiber intake (along with anything else that would help in the shedding weight category).
I'm on campus from 0700 to 1700 every day, so stuff I could throw in my backpack that would be healthy and not turn to mush would be a big area of help.
Otherwise, any advice would be much appreciated. Unless you're telling me to get lipo, I'm broke.
Thanks

Acclimate your body to eating less. Americans eat too much in general. Fruit and veggies are supposedly really good for fiber, especially if you don't cook them. I personally don't worry about that shit and just eat whatever I want. I've never actually been overweight though so I'm probably a terrible example. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

Water. It's heavy so you are getting a workout all the time and it's good for you. No calories yo! Seriously though, when I used to backpack regularly I'd spend all day hauling ass through the wilderness with 20-30lbs strapped to my back. Guzzle down some water, eat an energy bar and then it's back to it. You get fit real quick. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

Cheney definitely has the water covered, it's a must! Also, try to several smaller meals throughout the day. Have some egg whites before you head to school, during your first class have an apple, your next class some almonds, etc, etc. A lot of smaller meals throughout the day will keep you from getting hungry and always keep your metabolism burning (if you don't eat you go into starvation mode and it actually becomes more difficult to lose weight!). Eating five or six small meals a day is usually recommended. Maybe some protein powder to mix into your water while you're on the go (I'd go for whey protein if you're looking for something to help you ease any hunger pains). Cut out sugar if you can. Soda, some sports drinks (Propel is one of the best ones; only 4 grams per bottle!) and alcohol all have a ton of sugar. Cut them out completely if you can, or just limit yourself to one a day. It'll do wonders! Cut out fast food as well, if possible. There is a ton of fat and sodium in even some of the 'healthiest' fast food items. Fat is bad (obviously) but sodium is almost worst; yes, it helps you retain water, but that same water retention raises your blood pressure. Not good for the heart, brain, kidneys, liver, basically everything! However, life is hectic and fast food is convenient, so it's understandable that you'd still eat it. Just look for the healthier options at fast food places (for example, Taco Bell has their 'Fresco' menu that has some great alternatives to their regular menu!) or just healthier fast food in general (Subway and Qdoba are my favorites). That's all I can think of right now...I'll try to think of some other stuff to post for you! wrote:{pDs} TitaniumPhoenix: We're Mexican. I say we pull a razor outta our titties and cut them! Yay for eating healthy! DCMH, even if you aren't overweight, it doesn't mean you shouldn't eat healthy. It benefits you in the long run to eat good.
Anyways crappy, your high fiber foods are fruits, veggies, whole grain wheat products, seeds, and nuts. Google foods that are high in fiber for a complete list and how much fiber they have. The best advice I can offer you is to educate yourself. Once you start to look at things like calories, cholesterol, fat, fiber, sodium, sugar, etc. you find yourself making more educated choices. Also, drink lots of water. Cut out sodas, juices, etc. and you'll find yourself feeling better and that helps drop weight. That said, it's not like you can't enjoy a treat every once in a while. I've completely cut sodas out of my life (almost 4 years now!) but I'll have juice, lemonade, margaritas, etc. occasionally. :) Like DCMH said, cut back on intake. I'm not sure what the recommended calorie intake for a male wanting to lose weight is but find it out and keep a log of your calorie intake! A visual really helps. If you write down (or if you have an iPhone, Lose It is a good app that let's you keep a list and running total of calories taken in and it subtracts calories for your physical activity for a total calorie count), it helps to see what you have eaten. Sometimes you don't realize the random shit you eat that is extra, wasted calories (sodas!).
Exercise! Keep on keepin' on! Just a note - P90X isn't a filler, it's a straight up hard core exercise program that whips your ass into shape. You'll basically need to have 1 1/2 hours (sometimes closer to an hour) 6 days a week to exercise over 3 months. It also has a diet program to follow but Giller and I didn't follow it religiously. P90X rocks though. Giller and I are going to start it again in the near future (in addition to my marathon training, eek! I'm going to be able to outrun and kick anyone's ass!)! :) Even if you don't do it, you can do strength training in addition to your cardio. Do it every other day or alternate arms and legs every day. Whatever works for you. I personally think strength training is just as important as cardio. When you do it, it burns calories longer after a workout than cardio does.
No matter what you decide - it's a lifestyle, not a diet. You are making yourself healthier but if you stop, you'll gain the weight back and lose the muscle strength you gained. So good for you on your new lifestyle! :)

I try to eat healthy, it's rarely convenient though. Whenever questions of what is healthy to eat come up I always think of the Woody Allen movie Sleepers. He awakens in a future where it's been discovered that all of that bad stuff is actually good for you. People are chowing down on fatty red meat and stuffing their faces with chocolate cake and what not. I try to eat one good meal a week at least, fancy dinner or whatever. Something some real thought was put into. The rest of the time it's whatever is easiest, or what my girlfriend will cook me. I quit cigs and coffee, except in special circumstances. I cut way back on my fast food consumptions. That was a big one, it had been years since I had last gone so any kind of tolerance to the evil yumminess had long faded. McDonalds Breakfast every morning. Fast food is the hardest drug to quit. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

get some hansen's sugar-free sodas. They're pretty good and are sugar free. My favorite is the pomegranate. Eat shit that tastes good and is healthy that way you wont be tempted to eat good unhealthy shit. one thing thats hella good is chopped walnuts, almonds, diced avocado, blueberries or any other berry you have, and drizzle kefir on top. Fried tofu is actually really good. fry that shit in oil or honestly butter is alright, as long as you aren't eating a lot of other fatty foods. Then season with brewers yeast and soy sauce. I dont really know a lot of recipes, actually, for healthy food. Other than the two above things all I really eat that's healthy is raw fruit and vegetables. Bell peppers are delicious on their own and so are carrots and tomatoes. Pirate's booty is also pretty bomb.

I will sell you some of the gene sequence that gives giller a lightning fast matabolism. Just make a few million copies put them on some nano spheres and inject them at high velocity into you brain. Then you won't really have to worry about it anymore. Quote:

WTF, dude? Since when have I said, "Yea (which is spelled incorrectly, by the way), eat healthy numbnuts." But yeah - eat healthy. Honestly, I would recommend doing what Titanium and Mrs. Giller have suggested. Mrs. Giller and Phoenix are hott (in case you hadn't noticed), so they must be doing something right! Also: Have more sex. It's really good exercise and it's a lot easier to make a habit out of doing it every day than using a treadmill or whatever. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

However fooling yourself into thinking it can replace your regular exercise is not correct. Do it and your regular exercise and you'll be a calorie burning fool, though! Avg calories burned running 5mph (12 min mile) for an hour = 517 Avg calories burned during active, vigorous sexual activity for an hour = 107 So, yes, sex is good for you (assuming you are practicing safe sex if with multiple partners!)... Have lots of it! Just plan to do it and your regular workout! Remember it takes 3 weeks to make something a habit, so making yourself workout is not a hard habit to get into! :) (yes, I know DCMH's comment was a joke and that I just turned to into a learning moment but dammit, it's in my blood! I get paid good money to educate and teach - in a therapy sort of way - so I don't care! Now you know how many calories you burned in the sack last night! :) I know some of you will need to divide that number as you've never seen an hour's worth of "active, vigorous sex"... Ever! Haha, I kid, I kid!)

Chug some PCP and go outside. By the time you've killed seven cops with post-it notes and climbed a parking garage with your bare hands, you'll be in better shape than you've ever been. No, but seriously. If you're the type that packs on the weight easily, then dieting is going to work and it's going to suck. Protein powders, high-output foods (lots of healthy shit in a little bar). I won't pretend to have any real specialization, but I've lost weight before. Do you have ADD? Can you fake it? Get your doctor to prescribe Concerta. You'll eat like a bird and feel energetic anyway. Ride that train until you're a sliverous shadow of the man you once knew. Then stop. Live life again, remember what it is to touch human skin, then let yourself go in the vicious cycle of weight gain/loss. Repeat as needed. I feel like I should add signs that say "serious paragraph" or "joke paragraph" to everything I write.Safety + Peace

Get the fuzzy pink handcuffs!) Actually, since this thread is all about health and eating well and weight loss, I'll share that I've lost 40lbs since this summer! :D Once I get my injuries sorted out I'm jumping back into P90X! Yeeah boy! :D Are you still training with the military Crappy? That's pretty much the best workout you could ever get. They run you guys into the ground! wrote:{pDs} TitaniumPhoenix: We're Mexican.
