So which is the best? What do you use? Pros and Cons?

I need it to convert a large school related document and don't really want to mess around with sub-par converters.

As he is currently playing TF2, I'll answer for him.

He is looking to convert his ginormous dissertation from Word into a .PDF document.

Don't most schools have free access to the converters you have to pay for? I mean if a community college will pay thousands for symbolic manipulation programs they gotta shell out chump change for converting text formats right

Edit: I just remembered my school are jews and didn't pay for it, bill gates did..

I am unaware if any public computers on campus have it or not. I have tried very hard to avoid any public computer, so far I haven't had to use one. I would like to keep this up.

Yes all I want is to convert a .doc to .pdf. thats not too much to ask is it?

I've used primopdf, cutepdf, and pdf995 in the past. I don't remember anything specific about any of them except that they worked. I think one or more of them is shareware.

Well there you go.
Can you share anything with us about your dissertation or is it classified?

Of course I can share some of it with you, or at least I can now. The short and sweet of it is nanotechnology. I've developed a novel organic based semiconducting material that forms molecular wires. One of the nice thing about this material is it does not require any harsh solvents (acetone, chloroform, ect.) for processing, It can easily be processed in the universal solvent, water. As far as applications I suspect it could be used for light emitting diodes, organic based solar cells and possibly as optical coatings. If you want more info I can give the references for all my papers, but since most people don't care, i'll leave it at that for now.

100% awesome. It's probably all very far beyond my understanding but I would be interested in learning more.

BEST FREE PDF CONVERTER:

A Mac.
Any program that has a print function has a print to PDF function.
If you want it to be editable, Pages, the Mac counterpart to Word, has an export to PDF function (as well as export to .DOC for that matter.)

Excellent idea HolyJaw. Mrs. C is going to bring home her work computer, which happens to be a Mac. This should get the job done.

On a side note I was able to play with PrimoPDF, a freeware converter, and it seemed to do the job pretty well. The image quality was decreased somewhat in the conversion, but for most applications I think this program would be sufficient.
