Been there done that.

Short answer: No

Long answer: Possible, but not easy, requires a lot of modding to the operating system, which I never sucessfully managed after burning off my own custom 'Windows USB Install Disc'. My reason for attempting this was to be able to boot into MY operating system and not the College's, which is heavily restricted, extremely slow, buggy and badly managed.

If you want to try, heres a helpfull link:

Other badness to doing this is it'll supposedly wear out the flash drive significantly faster, they are so cheap now that's probably not a big deal.
If you can boot from flash devices just DL a linux distribution designed for exactly this situation in mind. I know there is one that comes all kitted out with software for running on untrusted machines, I think originally it was made for backpackers (not the wilderness kind) visiting internet cafes.

You'll be kissing blue screens all day. USB devices aren't fast enough to be "streaming" windows.

It's not actually the chip on the flash drive that would slow it down, its USB 2.0, it caps at 450MB/s (although, who gets that kind of speed, I cap at 25-40MB/s). If you really want to install an OS on a flash drive, get an eSATA flash drive (you can also get double sided, USB one side, eSATA other). The only thing is that eSATA isn't on to many machines (stock, no, custom, sometimes). So, I would say, just get a 2.5in hard drive and get an enclosure for it. $100 for 500GB, $20-50 for a drive enclosure (depends on the drive). Bam, portable hard drive which you can install an OS on.
Jeeps don't get stuck, they just take breaks.

You can absolutely do this.

Once USB 3.0 becomes a widely adopted format.

Would have to be installed internally, or using e-sata

They are less expensive than they used to be but compared to standard HDDs they are not "cheap" at all. Personally, I would save the money and buy a WD Caviar Black. For me though it's all about price/performance though, I gave up on trying to have the fastest stuff available a long time ago. The price premium just isn't worth it.

Another complication of the solid state drives is motherboard support. I've read of lots of people having issues with compatibility. If you do get one make sure it's not going to be a bitch to get working with your mobo.

You can do this but it is not a good idea as running an os off a normal USB drive will wear out the memory very quickly.
