I saw somewhere that an overclocked hex-core will set you back $1K above retail price. Fuck yeah.

Wow, this is getting out of hand. I'm a power user, and I have yet to find a good reason to consistently need more than 2 cores. Most programs don't do much work in parrellel so I don't see the point. Unless you want to run BOINC, while defragging your harddrive, while watching a HD movie, while playing a video game.

Thats basically a server processor.

There's been times where I wish I could play my Crysis while watching my bootleg blu-ray movies.

I have an Intel X58 with said socket.

YAY FOR THE FUTURE.

Although I'm not going to spend a grand to replace a 2.8GHz quad core i7 any time soon, considering that the bottleneck in this machine is the graphics card by a wide margin.

This.

Intel I7's are ridiculously overpriced. Unless you're running a server or doing heavy video editing six cores is excessive. Hell most games at the moment barely utilize three cores. Don't throw away money on an I7. If you're a gamer save yourself around 800 dollars by buying a AMD Phenom II 965 or 955. I run this and it tears through any game I throw at it.

Have an over clocked E8400 which is stock at 3ghz but at 3.6 it works so well I see no need for any more.

All of those cores would just sit there sucking up a extra juice.... and that sucker would get hot. The thermal design power or whatever is 135 watts of heat energy your heat sink has to remove...
