I've been thinking on and off about this topic for the past few months... who have been the greatest Americans in history? I'm posting this in our political forum because it's inherently a political question, but I am thinking more broadly than figures in just politics. Thus far I've got this guy as The Greatest American EVER:  Although I think on the scale of total badass motherfucker, this guy probably comes out on top:  Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

America has such a long and interesting history that I think that you would be hard pressed to pick out any person in history and be able to say "We are what we are because of HIM" I think there are probably about a dozen or so men you could point at and be able to say "They, as a group, shaped who we are today."
