Actually, this is a pretty bad ass idea... I mean, if you're a woman out by yourself in a questionable area of a city, why not? It's just an extra step for protection. I mean, you could always not be a dumbass and not go into said dangerous areas, but oh well... Oh it's awesome when the situation fits the intent, but there are many other situations in which they might be used improperly or not have any effect. Maybe it's more likely to be used as intended in places like Africa, but as commentators on the article point out... if some guy's raping a woman and has this thing suddenly stuck on him, it could very quickly escalate to him killing her out of rage.

Very true. Since rape is usually about power and hurting someone, I can see it backfiring terribly. The only thing I can see positive about it back firing like that is that the asshole would be caught for sure. You're still going to loose an innocent human life, though, which is terribly sad... I think a point that many people have also been missing is that if the rapist is in the know, he can always remove the device. Now I have not been able to look at these myself, but from the small pictures that I have found online, it would seem pretty trivial to remove one of these if you were a tad clever. For instance: to remove the device you would need to get the teeth to lay flat, so by inserted several thin plastic or metal rods to lay them flat. Other idea would to poor a lubricant in the device, as the teeth likely rely on friction. Another concern about the effectiveness I have is that men will be errect when the device is attached, what happens when they are no longer erect. So men decrease in size more significantly than others. Is it possible for the device to simply fall of for some men? Don't get me wrong, this device is a good start, but I have some serious engineering question about it.

For a normal self defense for an average woman I'd recommend something like a Glock 26 (9mm) or the 27 if you wanted more stopping power.

I'm aware of what it is, and what caliber it is. I'm just say that for a self defense gun for someone who doesn't shoot a lot, its not a great gun. Its got safties and a hammer, and you have to have a round in the chamber. If you are panicked, this could mean that you are disarmed before you can shoot. With a glock, if there is a round in the chamer, it fires when you pull the trigger. Barrettas are also heavy and large, compared to the 26 and 27, meaning that a woman might not want to carry it in a purse on a night out. I'm not saying they are BAD, I'm just saying that they aren't GREAT, especially for this application.

Ok Bragr...Do you own any guns? The 9mm baretta is a double action handgun. I am going to stop there and let you look that up on the interwebs. I am not giving my wife a glock to shoot. Well not with the horror stories, and first hand account from Cecil San of a glock blowing up in a guys hand at the range last year.

With all the talk in the article of rape being medieval... how about bringing back this solution?  The guy would totally notice its presence before its too late.

I think a few things might be missed here, so these are just sort of my thoughts on it.
1st) Rape can be about power and domination, but in the places where it's the most rampant, it's more "me want sex, me take sex as I have power" not "me want to exert power so I shall go hurt woman." Not a huge distinction when you're on the receiving end, but it's there.
2nd) These are a horrid idea not because they won't work, but because they will. So put yourself in the situation. You have a woman who was physically smaller enough to be overpowered, and forceable raped, now dealing with a large enough man to have raped her with teeth grabbing onto his dick. How happy do you think he is at this point? I'm seeing a woman who before would be suffering from rape and the traumas associated with it, now possibly getting killed by a man enraged about what's just happened. I'm placing no sympathy with the guy, he deserves everything coming his way, but I don't care to see a young girl or woman lose her life over her vagina.
3rd) These are designed to require a doctor to remove them. I think the thin strip of plastic somehow doesn't work, which is really interesting as the device is actually adhering to "humane" requirements by not breaking skin nor causing fluid entrapment. I think its rather...human (using that as a curse word here)...that a device that comes into use primarily during a rape has to adhere to humane standards in order to be produced.
4th) Think how jacked it would be to have to put one of these in yourself to go walk around a neighborhood. I don't deny it's a reality, but I could see it almost causing a form of mental trauma just purchasing and using these, knowing your in that bad of a situation. In America it'd probably be a bigger thing, in South Africa it's more accepted mentally as the reality of life I suppose.
Oh, and handguns are only practical for those who actually know what to do with them, who actually go to a firing range from time to time. People buying handguns "just for an emergency" are just asking for bad situations, and the false sense of security they provide all too often puts people into a bad situation where they quickly become useless and the person still ends up just as hurt.

Rape aint mideival....just like slavery it's incredibly natural (i.e. derived from nature, not from civilization.) We had a torture exhibit at the Museum of Man not too long back, had a bunch of these belts there. They noted that quite a lot of the time, soldier would have his last shag with his wife, then strap this on her before he left to war. So many times out of 10, he had just gotten her pregnant however, resulting in a horribly painful and dangerous situation for the wife.
