Supreme Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional for state and local governments to ban guns.

The larger debate aside I'll simply point out that people who "love guns" frighten me. Guns were developed for warfare and defense, and hunting for life sustaining food. They're a tool. So it scares me when so many instead treat them like toys.

Don't mind me. I'm just exposing the gaping hole in that argument structure.

I plan on owning a gun. I don't plan on shooting it at people or indeed anything living. Granted, it could be used for that purpose. But I've got no mind to.

Could someone please tell me if there's something wrong with that? If not, then the guns-r-only-4-srs-ppl argument goes flying out the window into the nearby bin where tired, recycled logical structures end up after they've been used to the end of their useful lifespan.

Difference being... computers aren't inherently destructive. You shoot a gun and whatever it's pointing at is going to be blown apart, punctured, bloodied, ripped, or killed.

From how you define your ownership I'd actually consider you a serious owner. You're evidently not going to treat it like a toy. Self-defense/home protection, I presume? I've contemplated buying a handgun for the same purpose, myself.

I've always admired weapon technology because of its sheer precision. I mean, its such an interesting piece of technology we have here. We take a little piece of metal and throw it so fast at something it causes the person to go into shock.

Guns aren't toys. Anyone who views a weapon as a play thing is immature. As a source of recreation, thats fine. I'm not a hunter, but I can respect the hunter culture. Shooting at a range is an excellent way to improve your hand eye coordination, as well as to become proficient with the weapon you're planning on defending yourself.

As far as this court overturning gun bans, I think I'm for it. Criminals will always have weapons. Gun bans aren't going to stop them if they want a weapon, which they probably will because of the situation they're in (i.e. drug dealing, robbing, etc) Common people wont.

I don't really know any statistics on how gun bans have effected violent crimes.

I sure as hell can't.
Anyone who has to kill another living creature to get their jollies, IMO, needs psychiatric help.

Shooting for sport... as in... nonliving targets... I can be okay with. Still, somehow, I find archery "less wrong" than guns in that capacity. Not sure why. Maybe due to destructive capacity.

Eh? Oh, I see. It doesn't bother me if they're the sort of hunter who is conservative about what he goes to hunt. Trophy hunters are stupid. Hunters who go out, kill some animal, and then eat it...I see no problem with this.

Archery seems more of a fair way to kill an animal. You gotta get closer, and rely more on your own strength.

Personally, I'd rather have a gun for self defense than a bow...but either would beat nothing.

Since I don't have a gun, I have a sword under my bed. I figure... it's better than nothing and I might be able to cash in on the shock value of the burglar having a fat guy with a sword going Braveheart on him.

Yeah well... he could kill an army with a rock and a toothpick. He doesn't count.

But yes... he also needs to psychiatric help.

I think something needs to be said here. Because it's true.

Shooting guns can be (and often is) fun.

Given that they can be shot safely in controlled environments (and often are), the argument that the primary function of a weapon needs to be for it to act as a tool of destruction is simply something I don't get. Yes, I could use it for defense, but that's quite honestly not my primary interest in owning one. I want to shoot it. I want to get good at shooting it. For the same reasons I would want to get good at anything else.

They are marvels of engineering, fun to use, and recently branded by our supreme court as a fundamental part of the American concept of liberty. People think guns are a heavy issue when really, they don't have to be. As long as people are smart with them, owning and operating a gun is on par with owning and operating a slingshot--which no one is about to ban.

Shooting guns, eating red meat, listening to loud music...these are all manly things to do.

In an ideal situation, everyone would be smart about their guns. Well, actually, in an ideal situation, no one would need guns because there'd be no crime...anyway...uhh...what was my point? Oh yes, idiots can own guns.

Its just like homeschooling, in my opinion. I was homeschooled. I know lots of homeschooled people. We're all weird in our own way, but we're quite normal. A lot of homeschooled families are way too conservative for my taste, but they're still very nice people. Does any of this interest the press? Nope. All you hear about are the nutjobs who "homeschool" their kids while locking them in the basement for 12 years.

The same is with the whole issue of the right to bear arms. There are plenty of responsible, intelligent people who use guns safely...and then there are idiots that don't secure their weapon properly which ends up in a child getting shot on accident.

Criminals? They'll get weapons regardless of a gun ban.

I have never touched a gun. I have never shot a gun. I have never been near a gun going off, in a gun shop, or to a gun shooting range.

and I cannot fucking WAIT to shoot my first gun.
