I have some ideas but will be hard-pressed to do much for a while. Even at the moment I'm sitting in the hospital room with my wife and son, and life at home will likely be hectic for a while. Then I'll be backed up on things to do when I go back to work. =/

And... I haven't wanted to seem overly eager with this new "ownership" thing Whut has given. As far as I'm concerned it's still his... the most I'll be is the general manager or something.

By all means, though, don't let my current status stop you all from discussing things. I'll be around enough to give thoughts and lend some support if needed.

One thing towards the top of my idea list would be rebuilding the site. I can't promise as good a quality as what Whut paid to have made image-wise (lest we run a donation for me to do the same), but I can build us a new PHP-based site that we'll have better access to than what we have now. Problem is... I doubt we'll be able to move threads from here to there. We might be able to archive this site for reference and disable new topics/posts, then put all new stuff in the new site. But anyway... I'm not pushing anything, either. I just know there's some dissatisfaction with bugs that have gone unfixed here.

Aha! See? I wasn't crazy. A site that only Sirius can fix isn't what we need right now.

Not just fix, but grow. Bugs are a pain but a stagnant site with no capacity to evolve also sucks. I can do some cool stuff in a LAMP environment (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) like integrating with server stats, linking forum accounts to Steam IDs and HLStats, etc., but the environment the site is on now is a mystery to me and access to the server is, well... limited. That isn't to say someone else couldn't evolve what we have but... I don't think we have such a person around.

And Whut shouldn't really have to host a site he's detaching himself from, either. I'm a little worried about putting it on my server due to its age but it does provide for a good LAMP environment.

I heard that guy is pretty much a vagrant now. Roaming from server to server without a clan, giving handjobs in dark alleys for rare TF2 hats.

Anywho, The WDF site is fine. Aside from some occassional down time because of some coding shit I dont understand, its miles above most other clan sites. What this place is missing from "the dream" as I understand it, is thus:
1. Active recruiting in a variety of games
2. Actual File maint (see latest game DL section that hasnt been updated)
3. Activities for the community - see all the cool shit CMS used or maybe still does. I dunno i just hang out with those douchebags on their mumble server. I hate to love them. or maybe its the other way around...half of them are old pds.
4. Someone to actually steer the ship.

Couldnt we just link the new, evolving site with this old forums cover. Seems like we could take alot of the graphics and rebuild using Lamp, but keep the theme the same.

I think that might be possible... just looking at the source real quick, the horizontal links along the top (News, Article, etc.) and the contents of the three "Latest" boxes are just HTML; not in any Flash or anything. So those are flexible.

So yeah... a new site can probably use the same graphics (assuming we have full rights to re-use the graphics in HTML of our own creation). New software, new threads, old look. Doable.

Riks: If you can get me access to the MSSQL server or a sql dump (2.5G the last time I checked), and give me a target (say phpbb or mybb) I could look into a conversion script to do topics and users (at minimum). I've also been know to be handy with LAMP, although I am more of a LLMP person.

I wish I could but I can't figure out how to access it, myself. Maybe Sirius can get us one... I'd give a conversion script a shot, myself, if I could get at it.

Obviously we're just starting this discussion so the software is up in the air...
For some other sites I host I took and have made improvements to RunCMS, which is a derivative of Xoops. Emphasis can certainly be placed on the forum module but it also offers other CMS features. Granted, I somewhat despise the code... but it's better than a lot of others I've come across. One nice thing (and selling point for me) is that it supports subforums, which not all packages do.

But yeah.. if we can get a dump or access to MSSQL I'm confident we could come up with something. Alternatively we could make a crawler to go over the site and pull posts... not as clean, but a possibility.

As far as advancing the community, are there any upcoming PC games that would pretty much interest everybody. Interest in TF2 has obviously waned and it seems to me like we need something else to base this place around now. I have not been paying much attention to the PC FPS genre, but I think we should figure out a way to choose a single game, this to me seems like it would also serve to solve the issue of stagnant applications.

I don't know of any off the top of my head, but if anyone else thinks of one, do tell.

Doesn't seem so. I asked the same thing a while back and the only one mentioned was BC2, and that was only 4-5 people. I was going to get us a server but my finances have gotten tighter than expected. =/

The problem with Steam is that it's too good. Running servers under it is really easy and many of the games are accessible to a lot of different people. It's also that accessibility that brought all of us together and now we'll be hard pressed to find other games that we have similar levels of interest in.

We're in a tough spot as far as that goes.

*whisper* look to the mod community... there's gotta be a niche'...

HL2MP was a godsend in terms of what it did for us, as we really cornered the market on that. We were the representatives for that game... TF2, as neato cheato as it was, was mainstream, and the market for recruits and community was overwhelmed. Too many servers and too few players = too nothing community...

Lol, Starcraft scares me (I think it's the fact that I know I will never win a single match...).
