I'm headed to Las Vegas in a couple weeks for some gambling, primarily at the craps table (yes, I know Blackjack may offer marginally better odds if you have Basic Strategy perfectly memorized, but I like the atmosphere of craps tables better, and ultimately my return has been better there).

Anyone out there play the game and have a strategy or two to share?

Last time I was there, I went primarily on the Pass line, followed by an odds bet as well as bets matching my Pass bet on the 6 and 8. I even had a complicated, if uneven, strategy for pressing the 6 & 8 bets if things were going my way. It worked... mostly. But I've read recently that the "safest" you can play is a Pass/Odds bet followed by two Come/Odds bets in a row (I barely understood how Come bets worked until reading about it). From some brief anecdotal simulation it seems to work well enough, though requiring a larger bankroll than my old way (since you've got basically 3x pass/come line bets and 3x odds bets going at once, all of which are potentially wiped by a 7).

If you had no clue about the stuff I just wrote, don't worry about it. You don't play craps. ;-)

I was in Vegas one year ago today.

Drank lots of Vodka. Thew up. Hated my life in the morning when I woke up with a splitting headache.

Then we went to the steam room at the hotel and sweated it all out. Felt much better.

I lost at craps. And yes, I don't play craps or otherwise gamble in any form. My pleasure receptors just don't get off on that. Happy that yours allow you the diversion.

I did drop $1 into a slot machine as I was waiting for my party to come down for the cab ride to the airport. I got back $20. I was still way down for the trip, but that was my biggest win.

I suck at gambling.

:(

What hotel did you stay at? My hotel's spa/fitness center costs $40/day to use!

Rio?

I think it was the Rio.

I was with 2 other people. Dunno what it cost, but I paid my third share to do whatever they were doing. Totally worth it, whatever it cost, because my body was hurting.

if you play 6 and 8 straight bets....you dont make a ton of money but it lets you play for a long time.

Ex. after point is established, play 6 and 8. As soon as either one hits, take down the winnings and the bet on that number. Then leave the other one until it hits...which you can take the winnings or press it on the number. if you do this you always come out ahead except when someone sevens out before you hit either number for the first time. understand?

Ex. ( ASSUME a 800 budget) I put 100 bucks on the 6 and 8 ($200 in) after the point is established on the 5. after 3 rolls the shooter hits my six. I take my 116 winnings and take down my 100 bucks on the 6 (i have 216 in my hand and 100 still on the 8). Now i really dont care if a seven is hit on the next roll because i am still in the money by 16 bucks. But lets say the 8 hits next. I take my winnings (116) and LEAVE the 8 up. 8 hits again. I press my winnings OR put them back up on 6. You can go on and on like this until the 7 or point is rolled. Sometimes you can get on quite the roll. This is a conservative strategy to keep you at the table for a few hours. If you dont panic, and dont go crazy you can alot of the time come away with 500 after a few hours.
by dont panic i mean there is obviously the chance that you place your 6 and 8 and then they are immediately wiped by a seven on the next roll...which sucks. But that shits on the whole table (except the asshole playing dont pass) so atleast you wont be alone in your misery.

Wow, so you're advocating not playing on the original point at all??

I've been experimenting with not only playing the Pass line + Odds but placing additional Come + Odds bets, essentially the opposite of what you're suggesting. From a probabilities standpoint, I totally see playing the most frequently rolled numbers (besides 7, obviously), but I don't know that I've ever seen a strategy as direct as "skip the Pass line, just bet on the 6 & 8 and hold on for dear life" :-D

Do I have it right? Heck, I'm open to any suggestions (besides "don't gamble it's bad, take your money elsewhere." I'm gambling my money as a form of entertainment, if you can't respect it, STFU)
