While looking for mods I found WorldGuard for Buckit, and I leveraged its settings to help avoid another forest fire like the one I started that spread veeerrrryy far. Specifically, because it was started by nearby lava, I disabled lava's ability to set nearby flammables on fire. But that's maybe not the best solution. While it prevents that specific start of a fire, it doesn't prevent other sources. So here's some options... Choice 1, obviously, is to remove all protection. Any fire source can start a fire and the fire can spread without limitation. Keep in mind that hopefully I can restore eternal fires at some point, which means forest fires would leave regions eternally burning until manually cleaned up. Choice 2 is to keep things as they are now. Lava won't start fires, but fires from other sources will spread naturally. Choice 3 continues to prevent lava from starting fires AND we add a restriction that that fire doesn't spread to leaves*. This should help prevent fires from leaping between trees a little bit. Choice 4 lets lava start fire but fire won't spread to leaves*, helping to prevent fires from jumping from tree to tree. * I haven't tested the restriction of leaves but by all accounts it should work

Voted for option 4. I think lava really should start fires and while preventing fire from burning leaves won't prevent it from spreading between trees altogether, it should in theory help limit the scope of out-of-control fires. Leaves also disappear automatically if there's no piece of trunk/branch nearby, and the fire should always get rid of those... so we won't have any little leave clouds oddly floating in the air.

I'm surprised I even need to post this - There is a advantage alot of people use in regards to burning leaves - namely that in a closed tree farm it's a hell of a lot easier to burn off the leaves and then harvest the wood then it is to wait for the entire mess to despawn to plant again. It's not as relevant now as it was previously - however not so long ago there was a bug where leaves wouldn't despawn at all - so doing this was damn near mandatory. I neglected to put a poll expiration on this originally, so just set it to 5 days. I don't know if that's from "now" or from when the poll first started... But it should expire sometime around this weekend.

I honestly like finding natural burning forests of doom. It means there's lava on the surface, which is cool. Porgon, why would you burn down your forest? You lose all of the saplings and like 1/3 of the wood. =( Edit: I withdraw my vote. If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. - Carl Sagan My Backpack

Edit: I withdraw my vote. It's a matter of saving time - and as I said in my post, before there was a glitch which made it mandatory, otherwise the leaves would just persist. Generally saplings and wood aren't in such a dire need that burning the leaves off hurts much. Generally saplings and wood aren't in such a dire need that burning the leaves off hurts much. Generally wood isn't in such dire need that you need some super-efficient tree farm. I've gotten by just planting/harvesting trees outside my outpost when I need it, and I'm building stuff the better part of every day. Though I do expect my needs to increase when I get to using planks in some of my architecture. As scary as that is. =/ Anyhoo. I guess we're back to a tie. Not sure what I'll end up doing if it ends as one. How it is now is obviously worse than any of the winning options, so needs to be changed to one thing or the other. Guess that's why coins are different on each side...

Either way, lava starts fires again - nice to see at least one piece of functionality restored. Dick Cheney's Mechanical Heart wrote:Porgon made me cry so hard last night when he kept getting me from behind over and over again.

Looks like choice 4 wins, even without removing Muff's vote from choice 1. I'll look to updating the server to that configuration once Bukkit is available for beta 1.3

So wood no longer burns for eternity as of 1.3 update. Might as well set it to default functions in my opinion. Quote:Razor: As hard as one might try no one will ever be able to pull one over on Super Penguin. Backpack of Win

Since wood doesn't burn eternally, no more forests of fire - it'll all just burn itself out. Mhm.. just tested to verify it and.. eternal burning doesn't have all that much to do with forest fires spreading. Fires usually go from leaves to leaves, not trunks to trunks. And even if it does go trunk to trunk, it'll spread before the previous trunk despawns. Anyway.. just disintegrated a couple small batches of trees by setting one on fire. If trees were as dense as they were during "the big burn", the same thing would have happened. You just wouldn't have had the leftover eternally burning trunk pieces afterwards.

Ok, so you not only don't know how fire physics work - but why forests of fire were a problem. I SEE. Since it burns itself out now - it's not a problem - yes you lose a forest, however because it doesn't leave a giant eternally burning pile of fuckery leftover - it's not nearly the issue it used to be. Stop disagreeing with me for the sheer shake of disagreeing with me- it's obnoxious and retarded - AT LEAST if you're going to say something - look the fucking shit up? It's not hard - they have a wikipedia, it honestly is as simple as looking up 'Fire' EASY LINK IS EASY*Indeed, a little bit mad - Tired of the freaking admin of our server not knowing how the game works - especially when he's playing with the controls of the world.* hay gais, I dunno, Rockets seem a little obnoxious so I'm going to turn off splash damage. More over I'm not going to listen to people when they explain why splash damage is in the game, or even acknowledge that there is a valid reason to why it's in the game - in fact only my opinion matters because I'm the admin and if you don't like how I want to play TF2, you can just find a different server, no ones forcing you to play here. hurr hurr hurr *ok, I lied, quite a bit mad.* Dick Cheney's Mechanical Heart wrote:Porgon made me cry so hard last night when he kept getting me from behind over and over again.

Eternal fires haven't existed on the server since Bukkit and the plugins were added, which predated this poll and predated 1.3. Further, eternal fires are only mentioned in the poll as a side note of option 1. The setting wasn't changed originally due to eternal fires; it was changed because of the level of destruction the fire caused. It literally spread from the origin farther out than the game's maximum render distance. And originally the setting was just to have lava prevent the start of fires, since that seemed like the most likely accidental cause. This poll was then created to revisit that solution to the problem; to solve it more accurately. So it still had nothing to do with eternal fires. The problem was the same as the original one: the scale of the fire. It's not hard - they have a wikipedia, it honestly is as simple as looking up 'Fire' EASY LINK IS EASY Yes. I'm fully aware how fire works. That was kind of the point of revisiting the problem to find a more accurate solution. Weren't you the one saying you often burn leaves off to get through them quick? If you knew anything about fire you'd know that'd turn the trunks to char in seconds, too. Maybe you should follow your own link. Stop pretending your creations are so grand - ohh look, I build a skyway that's nice - you know what would be REALLY useful and easy to put in? A cart system to go with it - so it dosn't take forever to go from point A to point B ( speaking of - guess what my secret project has been for the last week? hmmm ) meanwhile you keep going on about how to try to make all your shit so pretty - and it's not! It's fucking minecraft man - the best beauty you can get out of the game is vaugly 8bit art - which don't get me wrong, I love the 8bit era - but pretty it wasn't. So putting the idea of flat art away - what has been the best 3d sculpture made on the server so far ... sad to say, a giant penis. It's not too bad, I mean, it was a magnificent giant penis Dick Cheney's Mechanical Heart wrote:Porgon made me cry so hard last night when he kept getting me from behind over and over again.
