Happy Presidents' Day. I have the day off. But I'm going into work in a little bit anyway. :( How about you? Get the day off or are you like Whut, who has every day off because of the economy? You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." GivePeaceAChance: "If the Tempest had nipples, I'd pinch that shit." Xylicon: "I'm about to deliver my [Richard] in your face for posting that stupid shit. " WDF?: "He keeps reaming me... night after night... I'm rather sore." Working, but from home. Like most days. So I have almost every day semi-off. =P 'course that means I have to deal with my job AND the baby... but at least I save money on gas.

So, you only get two days off. Sorry. You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." GivePeaceAChance: "If the Tempest had nipples, I'd pinch that shit." I'm like Whut...every day off because of the economy...well, that and being two months removed from graduating college and it seems like nobody is hiring, and the ones that are want to know what my grades were...and they were not good...grades...psh...over. rated. In my view, a degree is a degree is a degree, it's just that some idiots chose to actually work harder than they had to for the same piece of paper HAHA stupid horse, the sign says Deer crossing Cantrip wrote:For all you know, you may have been dessert on a day-long cock-feast.

In my view, a degree is a degree is a degree, it's just that some idiots chose to actually work harder than they had to for the same piece of paper I really hope you are kidding. First of all grades of a recent grad are important to an employer since you have zero or very limited job experience and grades give them an idea of your grasp on whatever field you're in. Second, I would understand your arguement if you had a bad overall GPA but an awesome program GPA because it's understandable that college students may be jack asses and party, especially during the time you are completing those general classes (I am guilty of getting a couple C's in easy classes my freshman year because I was goofing off). But sucking in your core classes either shows you didn't get it or that you are lazy/stupid/immature (pick one or more). All of those are concerning to employers. Why hire a person who falls into one or more of the above categories when you can hire the person who was successful in their core classes? Who would you pick? Two candidates apply. Both have no work experience. One graduated with a 3.93 GPA in their core classes, the other a 2.87 GPA. Going by those stats, it's a no brainer. I get that there are other factors but come on, why wouldn't they pick the 3.93 GPA person? /rant I didn't work. I do contract work on M,W,F so I can flex my schedule when needed or wanted. So I went to a doctor's appt and then had lunch and ran errands with my mom. I will be paying for it the rest of the week though! That's ok, a 3 day weekend is worth it! :)

Mrs. Giller wrote:--Good advice and such.-- I agree, but I have a funny story: One of my math teachers in high school got stuck with a C or a D in one of his college classes (I think it was for his Masters). You wanna know why? Because the school grades on a curve, and at the end of the semester, he was one of 4 people who actually hadn't dropped the class (it was some sort of ridiculously advanced math). Come finals time, they all score an A on the final, but thanks to curving, he got stuck behind the 2 people that did less than 10% better than him. Seems pretty sucky to me. School: Aimed towards those with a superior memory and memorization skills. I didn't have either. I was a straight A student until high school, when everything was about "this math formula" and "that chemical formula". Oh. And they make you read idiotic, boring books. Yeah... I barely graduated. Then I ignored college and just went straight to full time work. Never looked back. And I never had to worry about any debt.

And while it's convenient for you to be in a career that requires no degree not all professions are like that. I had to get my master's degree to do what I do. I did a lot more that just memorize shit during my 6 years in school.

Mrs. Giller [GwDR wrote:]Everything Mrs. Giller said... Since this is a "what you did on Pres. Day" thread, I'll be brief in my retort...form of, a metaphor! If my school would have been a place where 37 pieces of flair were the minimum... I would have put on the 37 pieces of flair...As it was though, 15 pieces of flair was the minimum Sure, some of the time I wore 20, maybe even 25. The only difference is, I already have five years of management experience, getting paid $12.50 an hour working nearly every night and weekend having little to no social life to babysit kids getting paid $7.50 an hour to wash dishes, clean floors and tables, and act like total idiots and a-holes to customers. Lord knows I made some B's when I could have put forth more effort and gotten A's. I was a student. I liked sleeping in, procrastinating, and partying all while working to be a responsible adult at the same time. :) I guess I just felt like arguing in celebration of President's Day!! I mean, presidents have to argue so I decided to get all presidential up in here. :)

Really I'd say most careers don't, with the exception to the very high skill jobs like doctors, lawyers, and others that require you to be a repository of a lot of information. Otherwise you can usually learn all you need by doing it--even if under someone else's guidance in a sort of apprenticeship. And by "don't" I mean, technically shouldn't require it. But employers will of course still use the piece of paper as a filtering technique, even if they dismiss the applications of those with a significant amount of real world experience. That, along with the debt it puts people in, are the two key reasons I don't like the higher education system. Mind you, I've never even been burned by it, so I'm not coming from some personal position of bitterness. I've gotten every job I've wanted because, in my industry (IT, programming) a lot of people are self taught and many companies realize that. I just wish more industries did, so that colleges would have less of a stranglehold on peoples' lives. It's all a gamble. You put yourself into debt to get a piece of paper that, at the end of the day, doesn't even guarantee you a job to pay off that debt.

You put yourself into debt to get a piece of paper that, at the end of the day, doesn't even guarantee you a job to pay off that debt. I guess that's why our views are different. I'm in a field that is a high skill profession and work in settings surrounded by others that are as well. I wouldn't want a therapist or nurse who didn't have the knowledge of the disease or injury they were treating. I know my skills as a therapist have grown with the years I've spent on the job (in addition to the 425+ clinical hours I clocked in grad school) but my academic background is what allows me to perform evaluations and treat every patient individually so they have the best possible therapy. I'm also lucky to be in a high demand field that does guarantee a job... unless someone is so shitty or unethical that no one will hire them. All that said, I do get that there are professions out there that don't necessarily require a degree but there are things you learn in a classroom setting, no matter the degree, that do prove to be helpful in a professional setting. It's one of those things where in a perfect world, it would be great if everyone could go to college and not end up in debt. But life isn't easy and people have to choose sometimes. Doesn't make either choice wrong!
