I have an unused server (long story) and nothing to do with it. Anyone interesting in having a public minecraft server? If not, anyone interesting in web hosting or renting it outright?

Public minecraft server would be great for getting our name out there, Minecraft is ridiculously popular.

Not sure all the drama on the forums looks good to newcomers though.

We'd have to expect more with a public server, too, even if we strap it down pretty tight. A lot of servers that advertise publicly still use whitelists, and many use the tools provided by plugins like WorldGuard to assign areas and protect others'.

Alternatively a public server could be advertised as PvP, which really means "anything goes" and would allow for periodic resets. Would just need to make that clear up front.

You just can't help but get your fingers in any server you can, can you?

kidding, partially -

Though I am curious as to why you think it would need periodic resets were it a PVP server - which doesn't really mean 'anything goes' at all, because you know, PVP games don't exist at all, like castle wars

but - digress - care to answer?

Public server is a good idea yea but i am afraid it will have to be just like riks , Creeper damage off , and all those mods like whitelist and other mods to remove REAL griefing (edit: i mention this because i feel we dont need 2 of these kinds of servers ..)

means no tnt , water or lava buckets with out an admin permission , No mob spawners , no pvp damage

All these can and do provide a way to grief someone else, so many others i wont list as well

A pvp is just an invite to griefers unless it has a whitelist that requires something long term or big to get on but if its a real pvp with no mods like above then it would fun

Well, there are two components here: Public or Private, and then its focus.

To address public or private, I'm not sure an actual public server is viable--meaning anyone can at any time begin playing on it without limitation. As Frost points out it'd just be an open invitation to griefers. We'd have to strap it down so tightly to prevent griefing from destroying the game that there'd barely be a game left to play.

Then we get into different levels of player approval or access, which I personally see as the server becoming more "private". Whitelists, caged spawn, etc., or any mechanic that requires an admin or moderator to provide access isn't much different than what we have in place now, which I think we all consider to be "private".

And then we get into modes...

Focusing on creative has been covered to death in other threads, so I won't repeat it here again.

Focusing on PvP means fewer restrictions to help support the game mode. Players need to be free to destroy each other and each others' defenses. TNT, Creepers, lava, etc., should all be fully available. In order for people to find each other they should build closer together (versus any distance apart in creative) and they need to be able to find resources to both build and rebuild. That's where I think regular resets come in; if everyone keeps building and rebuilding, say... within 1000 blocks of spawn, rare resources will run out quick.

As I see it, server maintainability ranks like this:
1. Private Creative
2. Private PvP/Unrestricted
3. Public PvP/Unrestricted (with destruction implied already, griefing isn't as damaging as on Creative)
4. Public Creative

See that sounds like a server we should have , We are all grown ups and can behave.. Putting less restrictions on the server helps us all

But if we go hardcore , like PVP full time anything goes server i say hell yea.. Build anywhere you want and try your best to protect your shit from thiefs

half the fun in that mode is makeing traps and shit to catch stupid thiefs lol

Bugger... took a while to find this thread.

What about setting up Monday Night Combat server? Just bought it (on sale) and while I'm not sure I'll be playing it much myself, I know others in the community have it and with the free-try/sale weekend, there might be a boon in players looking for servers.

And it's a Steam-based server install, so should be easy to get going. And probably not as mod-heavy as TF2 is. Might be an easy win. Plus it's of the same goofy-fast-team-shooter vein as TF2, so we might have decent crossover.

That would make no sense Rikaelus, go back to 1st grade!
Just kidding, sounds more than logical.
