We'll have to see.

Best case scenario: al Qaeda fractures into smaller, less worrisome groups
Worse case scenario: Someone worse takes his place

Probably not much from our perspective. 9/11 hasn't successfully attacked the US in almost a decade, seemingly occupied in wars in the Middle East. Their presence there may change, but probably not in any way that would be obvious to Americans.

If it affects us at all it will be politically. While the "War on Terror" didn't have any specific, defined goals, the death of Bin Laden (the war's catalyst) which is certainly a milestone in the war, might be used to declare an end to it--or at least a dedication of less resources.

Eh, Rik? 9/11 hasn't attacked? HAH.

Anyways,

Here's what happens (I'm from the future):
- The killing was timed perfectly to interrupt Trump's show, just after the Correspondent's Dinner and just before campaign time. PERFECT.
- The right is stumped for 24 hours and even Limbaugh says "Go Obama"
<<Now, for the things that haven't happend yet>>
- The right begins to doubt the military's sequence of events, USA splinters over those who believe, those who don't believe and those who don't give a ruddy fuck stay out of it
- Obama uses this to guide the fear-mongering started by GWBush to try to get re-elected
- There is a fierce campaign; Trump throws in to the ring just to garner the Tea Party vote, Tea Party tries to get a 3rd ticket but everyone knows they're Republicans anyways
- Going in to election time, no one's sure if Obama can get re-elected due to his inability to maintain his previous campaign promises; he starts slowly talking about bringing back the troops this time for realsies
- He also starts talking about closing Guantanamo... mean it... for realsies
- The ballots come in and are being counted.... it's a close 50/50 split between Obama and Trump... there's a recount in at least 2 districts
- Everyone waits on pins and needles as.... America, once again, re-elects the incumbant because we'd rather face someone they KNOW they can hate vs. someone they DONT KNOW they can hate

The next 4 years pass in relatively the same manner as they have for the past few decades... with USA in a decline

China begins to make strategic power plays; makes a coalition with a few other countries to stop trading in US$, US$ declines, some EU countries try to hop on board with this new currency but get smacked down behind the scenes.

Killing Bin Laden wasn't politically timed.

It will be used for political gain by Obama after the fact (and, frankly, it should be. Any other politician would also use it thus).

His death was a pyrrhic victory -- it was symbolically significant to the American people, but it will likely embolden and galvanize to action various extremist cells that might not have otherwise attacked the U.S. The information recovered from his compound might prove useful, but he certainly wasn't a day-to-day leader of the organization and hadn't been for some time. So it's not as if we have suddenly cut the head off the snake. The various splinter groups from Al Qaeda were already fairly autonomous and remain so now.

Alright, Endyss. A challenge.

Rationalize this:

February 1, 2004: Janet Jackson, decades-long actress, singer and star in general, shows her nipple and breast on live national TV; America is in an uproar and DEMANDS an explanation for such atrocious indecency
May 2, 2011: Osama Bin Laden, villain of the United States for an entire decade, hated by most on a level akin to Adolf Hitler is shot and killed in Pakistan. Americans demand proof and pictures, and openly view a (falsified) photograph of the scene.

Rationalization: Most Americans are stupid.

Nudity doesn't bother me, and I don't play the "pics or it didn't happen" bullshit. I count myself among a pretty small minority in those sorts of beliefs...

I challenge your premise of rationalization.

Both are examples of media hyping a perceived scandal, neither of which have much basis in reality. Conceding a lack of hard numbers to back my argument, few people I am aware of were genuinely offended by the "wardrobe malfunction." The fixation was merely a press that smelled blood in the water. Similarly with Bin Laden -- I'd argue very few rational people are demanding to see the photos because they seriously question that he is actually dead; if anything, it's more of a somewhat pathetic cultural sadism looking for visual (and visceral) fulfillment of a national desire for vengeance. i.e., actually seeing him dead somehow feels good.

*sigh* I miss our discussions...

That's where my thoughts are, as well. Nobody *needs* to see the pictures to be convinced, and if they're having trouble believing it now, a few pictures wouldn't change that. They want to see them for some morbid pleasure, some unethical desire for satisfaction at anothers demise.

If they think they have a legitimate reason to see them then I'm all ears, but pictures shared through newspapers or over the internet aren't exactly very convincing as proof, considering how easy it is to fake such things.

It's similar when people state they shouldn't have buried the body at sea; that we should have brought the body back to the states. Why? What possible legitimate reason could there be to bring his body back here? No ethical reason that I can think of.
