With interest in the Tempest seemingly waning, I've looked into putting Minecraft back online. There's one important plugin I'm having trouble getting updated--and haven't found a simple replacement yet--but I should be good to go after that.

Also...
With the Stargates being able to take us between separate worlds, if you have a fancy world you'd like added to the server, let me know. It can be a way to have our own personal playgrounds without bumping into other peoples' tunnels.

1.8 is shaping up to be awesome and I will totally play on the server again. I think it would be a good idea to make a new "1.8 world" that we can all play on. But if everyone goes off into their own worlds it kind of ruins the fun of multiplayer for me.

Yeah, been updating my newest creation with stone brick stairs, trying out pistons to automate some farms, etc. I've just about perfected a "stone maker" contraption that, using pistons to control the mixture of water and lava, pushes cobblestone blocks out in front of the player to break, then delivers them right to the player in a stream. Not a lot of value since it's easy enough to mine, but figured it was something to play with.

If the server gets back up (now I have to update it all for 1.8--bleh) I'll probably make a vanilla 1.8 world fresh for everyone and move my SSP map in as another world.

Okay. Jury's still out on 1.8. I like some of the stuff they've added but it feels like Notch is pushing the game away from the sandbox it is, more and more towards combat/adventuring. Endermen in particular seem devastating to the idea of a long-term SSP/SMP world, but are great in concept for shorter term worlds with a focus on adventuring over building.

They've already begun picking apart my mob traps in my new city. I've had to turn on Peaceful mode. -_-

The new passive mob mechanics will also make material collection more difficult, depending how it turns out. I guess there's "breeding" coming in 1.9, so we'll see...

An adventure game doesn't need the kind of building and resource gathering Minecraft has, which has been what has defined the game before now. Why would anyone buy Minecraft to hunt monsters and explore caverns when you can do that in any number of other games, including Skyrim which is about to be released? *Those* are adventure games.

If Notch wants more adventure in Minecraft he can always add another mode with mechanics that emphasize on it. It's a pretty easy way to make the game offer more variety while also avoiding alienating a lot of the existing players.

Im always up to some Minecraft. But I agree that the point of multiplayer is to play with others, not eventually casting gates and ending up everyone playing in their own world. But alas it is understandable since there is always gonna be someone who is gonna wanna blow someone else stuff up.

If someone wants to run and maintain the server, let me know and I'll get you access and an overview.

Otherwise... I think I'm done with Minecraft and it's hard to run a server for a game you don't play...

Is the server still online? I might come play on it, but I don't think I know the IP anymore unfortunately, could someone PM it to me please?

It's online but outdated now. Someone will have to volunteer to maintain it, if we want to keep it.

I'm glad that its becoming more of a game than just a lowfi 3d modeling engine. The reason I stopped playing it was because I was losing interest in exploring. I wanted more stuff to find!

Ideally I'd like a deep survival game with all the creative outlet that minecraft had before. That way (unless you're a cheater) you know people are really good at the game when they have towering skyscrapers in their server. You know? I was always really proud of mega-projects on the server I played on because we always had 1-7 people working on it, and we all harvested materials for it. So while some people were building, we had a team of people out exploring for the really valuable stuff too. I really liked that cooperative building spirit.
