I just wanted to know if upgrading my video card and more RAM would really help my computers performance. Also suggestions on what card and what type of RAM thing to get. I don't know much at all about computer but i hope someone can help me and give me a few pointers. Please note that i don't want to spend a fortune upgrading either i would just like to find a mildly expensive way to upgrade my computers performance so I can have exciting and enjoyable game play. I like what you guys put while I was away, but I think it was best that I changed it.

HT does not mean you have two CPUs in fact you might want to disable it in your bios.. Hyper Threading might actually make your system slower since most games today are single threaded. Get more ram, please for the love of god... get at LEAST another gig in there.. Ram is the most important thing you can get to drastically increase performance.. and no.. you cant ever have too much. Your video card costs about 15$ on ebay.. I suggest you upgrade that STAT... dont expect to be playing anything good any time soon... The on board AC97 audio decoder is GARBAGE get a 10$ sound blaster or if your feeling sexy go for an audigy series card.. you will be surprised how much smoother everything RUNS (thats right sound mixing takes alot of CPU and ram which can cause stuttering and thrashing in games) So yeah, priorities.. 1GB+ RAM Vid Card Sound Card Turn off HT (in bios) GLHF I read ALL your private messages.

I agree w/ sirusdv, Billion....RAM should be your first priority. It'll give your PC alot of breathing room, you should have at least a Gig nowadays, then work on the VC the one you have is on the LOW side.....sry. OK since you don't wanna spend alot then just buy another stick of the same stuff you have now BUT check to see how many slots you have...."you should be able to have another available" and they are very easy to install. The hard part actually is to remember to ground yourself B4 going into the PC's internals so you don't destroy it by sparking it ...yeah i know scary but really man just dont work on carpet.... The side's of the memory stick have a lil lever's that should be pressed down(most likely it'll click)at the same time and it'll just pop up BUT make sure you grab it from the edges OK? Take a look at who made the memory and what "type" you have so you can either "upgrade it" to something better or just to get the same thing.....if you still don't know then take it to a PC repair place and just ask them what kind it is ..remember you don't have to get it there :) you just wanna know what it is ...then you decide where on-line you'll actually get it..... buy a can of compressed air too so you can blow out the dust bunnies while it's opened. You know your VC is an AGP type so you might get a decent deal on a 6800 series.....NOT an Ultra cause your diff. gonna have to have a better Power Supply but a GT most likely.......

sweet guys thanks for the help i will defiantly do that. But about the video card I know I'm going to need to get a new one soon, but I had thought when you up grade you usually won't have enough power or something referring to the mobo...not sure since i don't know much about this stuff so if someone can just answer that for me.

GLHF
Hey thanks for the in depth help Sirusdv, but i have no clue what you talk about with hyper threading, and i don't know where the bios.. is so if you could point me in that direction that would be stupendous. Alos what is GLHF? I like what you guys put while I was away, but I think it was best that I changed it.

Don't sweat the VC for now...just get some more memory and the SAME TYPE or better......a Gig is what you want.... yours "maybe" PC2700 DDR400 but to be sure you need to take it out and look at the writng on it's side....... The PS is only if you end up getting a top-of-line VC like a 7900GT(mine) cause it needs a certain amount of amps on the 12volt rail....and it needs a certain kind of plug...which you don't have ....just stick to a 6800 series for now....that will need an xtra molex plug.....but that combined w/ the gig of RAM should do nicely.....lemme know if you need step-by-step instructions...

Do you have a PCI-E slot? I've got to a disagree - for raw performance in games replacing the vid. card should be the higher priority on that system. Games won't load as fast and might be more prone to stuttering and grinding when they have to pull from the pagefile but overall playability will be better than a ram boost. that MX440 is a total piece of shit and is holding back that system more than anything else, dumping a 6600GT in there instead would probably triple performance in the Source engine. On a budget for a box like that I'd throw in whatever the best AGP card you can find (probably something like a 6800) and a half gig of ram and call it good enough. AC97 onboard really isn't that bad on most boards, it's damn good on quite a few of them these days unless you are aiming for high-end shit. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

teh intarweb sez: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pci-eI'd bet money you don't since you have an AGP vid card. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

I have been looking around for a 6600 GT but i can find a GT.

One I had found don't know if it would work. Links to what i should buy would also be very helpful, such as what RAM card to buy because i thought you had to get a certain kind. But I don't know these things and I would hate to have to pay someone to tell me.
Thanks. I like what you guys put while I was away, but I think it was best that I changed it.

I just found this one and it seems that it would be awsome. The price is right too, but once again I dont know if it would work on my computer.
