OK turbo listen closely.......and follow these steps ok??
What your doing is starting completely over and thats not a bad thing cause you get to start "fresh" and brand spankin new.......bad thing you may end up with crap left over from your last copy of Windows (those Viruses I mean) so don't set it to repair....just start over .....this sorta thing should be done yearly but alot of people don't care since they figure "what I'm running fine?"
Anyhooo........follow these instructions....
Install your Windows CD into the CD-ROM and "press" any key to boot from the CD (later on in your BIOS you can change it to boot from the Hard Drive) it appears your PC is booting from the CDROM so its cool for now.....
After your system has booted off the CD, the installer will start the text mode part of the set-up.......
Now since you don't have dual HD's or even a SATA drive(i hope) and just a regular HD then you don't press F6 !!!
Otherwise.....just press any key and/or wait for the welcome screen....
Next follow the prompts until you get to the partitioning screen......you'll need to tell Windows how you want to configure your Hard Drive DON'T REPAIR IT just start over.....For Maximum performance use the NTFS format that spans the entire HD (NOT A FAT32!!)
Might take 10-15 minutes depending on how big your HD is ...so go grab a cold one..:D o, BTW use the Quick set-up choice......it's faster...
You'll be in the GUI stage next...the screen you'll see is the Language options screen. you know what to do , go on to the next step........
The next one is the Network set-up. Typical settings work for most DSL n Cable connections so no worries there....Windows should Reboot a final time.........
Following the Final reboot you'll be prompt to "activate" it...........I recommend you hold off until you have all the drivers set-up for your hardware and everything is working properly.....
Now chances are you need to go on-line to fetch all the latest drivers, updates, and patches for your system. BEFORE you go MAKE SURE YOU TURN ON THE FIREWALL!!!
Theres usually a lil red shield that'll tell you to turn it on so do so!
IF,,,,,IF you don't see this then probably have an OLD copy of Windows without the SP's.....my copy came with SP2 so it has quite a few updates that came w/ it but I also own a copy from WAY back in 2K1 and it didn't have a firewall!!! freakin scary man....it's been said a hacker can make his way to your unprotected PC in 10minutes.....sheesh
Open Internet Explorer and go to
www.windowsupdate.com and install Service Pack 2......click scan for updates go directly to Critical Updates and Service Packs section ....install SP2....REBOOT! Once that's installed go to your Motherboards manufacturer website and DL it's Chipset drivers make sure you reboot after installing them...........
GAWD I hope you know which ones you have........

Intel:support.intel.com
nVidia:www.nvidia.com
SiS:www.sis.com............Phew!
If you had the CD that came w/ your PC then you may have to use it cause it will able you to get on the Internet ..because it needs the drivers so then go ahead and use it for now but I prefer you went to the site and got an Updated one instead........
SO....go back to Windows update and check AGAIN for more updates (you'll be surprised when it has more waiting for you , trust me)
it may say you have to activate your copy and if it does I would hold off .......
Now install the Video Cards drivers preferably from the makers web site cause they should be newer than what came with it......you'll probably have to reboot........next do the soundcard and anyother hardware you might have in no particular order ...after all those drivers are done go back to Windows update and finally you can activate if they tell you to do so ......
