I know this may seem rather odd but I dont know what prog/tool to download to start mapping, and I will need LOADS of help I am betting.
. . . .
Oh and Aloha! I am fairly new to this forum and HL2 CTF. I played HL2 DM and HL1's The Ship (before purchase was needed). See ya at the Tomb ^_^ !

To be able to map you will need to download the source SDK package from steam (its free). then you run HAMMER world editor to begin mapping. mapping does take a lot of time but once you get the hang of it, you will get hooked and you will soon start loosing track of time building maps. i suggest for any new mappers to read some walkthroughs. once you learn the basics its all about building from there, but you need to know all the simple stuff before you begin. we have stickies that will take you to some of the better webistes that will get you started. glad to see new faces around and feel free to ask question, we are all here to help and believe it or not, the mapping section lately has been more busy then the other sections on this website.

Ok bad news, think this may be a technical issue but here goes. Hammer won't start. It gives me a 'The configuration for the game you're trying to edit is invalid or missing.' message. I tryied all the reset optons and reinstalled 3 times, still no go. When drunk and can't aim for your life, trust the crowbar. OMG LOOK AT THE AWESOME HL PROGRESS!

if you recently reinstalled steam, hammer won't open for the program you are configuring unless you start that program first.
example- if you want to edit hl2dm, then you have to start the actual game of hl2dm, then quit the game. this will write some files in the necessary folders that hammer needs to see. so after a fresh reload you need to run your games just once so that hammer can see the created files and configure itself.
