The problem I am running into is I am inexperianced at overclocking for one, and somethings not working correctly anyway.  SO first I will explain my rig first.

Motherboard is A8R32-MVP Deluxe from Asus (crossfire 3200 chipset is on this board)

The processor is an AMD64 X2 4800

I have 2 gig of ram from g-skill

The graphics card is an x1900xtx  with a crossfire card with it.

This computer is all air cooled but is very efficiant cooling (6 areocool turbine fans in an antec p180 case)

I have experimented with overclocking on this rig and was able to some manually, unfortunately  it was highly unstable and crashed.  This mobo has something called "AI NOS" which is at a percentile from 3% to 20% overclocking in it.  This is through bios not a software overclock.  Its usually wont even boot up after after I try to do it.  I have updated all my bios with every bios update they made and still not having any good results.  Overclocking isnt something im really wanting to get into, but I would like to find some more horse power out this 4800 chip.  I am prepared to purchase an fx-60 chip and use that instead.  I am not sure if the crashing is the memory timings or the processor wont go faster than it already does which is at 2.4, I am looking for something at 2.6 or higher.  I hope someone can help me out with this.  I am prepared to spend some money to fix this problem by changing some hardware, though this rig is less than 7 months old and dropped 2200 into it.

Though other thing is that I should get the am2 stuff, wait for directx10 cards to become available and start from fresh.  What would you do for more performance?

Okey dokey, time for me to chime in.

Check out this guide for overclocking for noobs: http://forums.anandtech....497607&enterthread=y

That will probably get you going. Though it probably would be safe to hit 1.5V for your 4800X2, I've gotten 2.7ghz out of 1.45V from my 3800X2, I might be able to get more, but 1.5V only yields another 25-50mhz and the temperatures are not worth that much.

A good program to test stability would be SP2004 or just prime95, do the blend test as it stresses both CPU and RAM. I can't stress this enough, RUN PRIME FOR MORE THAN 24 HOURS. It may take incredibly long, but leaving it on for more than 24 hours guarantees stability with an overclock. I've had overclocks fail prime during the 17th hour and when gaming heavily suffer crashes. Do not test for 6-12 hours and call it a day, it will not be guaranteed stable. And remember, the longer the better.

Also a good thing to remember is that temperature is not the only thing to consider when overclocking. You can have a watercooling system and still kill your chip incredibly fast if you're pumping dangerously high volts into it. Anything above 1.5V for an X2 is considered dangerous, low tempatures cannot deny the fact that a lot of electricity is being pumped through the transistors on the CPU and stressing them.

Ask me if you've got any other questions
