Well the Crypt is going good and strong and kicking ass, It really does not need all that much attention anymore and so this week I am ready to turn my attention back to this ol lady we affectionately know as the TOMB.

I am throwing this thread out to start an open and frank discussion of what needs to be done to get this sucker rolling again.

A couple of different ideas have been thrown up to me over the last couple of weeks. one of which is to make the server a noob starting point. (aka fight club 2 kind of thing). Another idea that someone else had was to model the work Nite has done on his personal server onto a larger scale. This is a very intriguing idea but has minuses as well as a bunch of pluses.

Another thing is that it is going to be my intention to revisit the admin list for the Tomb and redesign it to very much favor people who are going to be able to contribute time and efforts to attracting a player base back to the server. It does not serve any purpose to throw out admin tags all over the place and watch those people go off and spend all their time playing in other places while ignoring the server they are supposed to be helping to develop and admin. This is a little change of pace from some things I have said in the past but hey I am new at this. I get to learn on the job which means making some mistakes as long as I learn from em and go about doing things in a better way. People I am very versitile and so you have gonna have to stay away to keep up with things around here.

Some people have offered me congradulations for the resurgence of the the Crypt back to the top of the charts but I dont really think I have much to do with it. I give credit to two things. Those things are the awesome gaming name of WDFnews and the clan members and regulars who play the server. I beleive our members and the kick ass people who play with us are the reason we attract so many people so quickly. Now the Tomb already carries the name of Wdfnews and so what we need is the second part. Kick ass people to play here on a regular basis. I am counting on the Tomb admins to help build that. You guys just tell me what you need to help get the job done.

What my take on this issue is that people are generally bored of CTF.  This is probably because of the community size, the familiar faces, the familiar maps in the one or two active servers.  If anyone has noticed, Nite's hideout server has been snatching players constantly because of the instagib and friendly fire uniqueness that he tacked on to the maps.

His maps are also very unique.  That also pulls crowds.

Basically, if we want to keep the Tomb alive until 1.8 we need to do something simply different than the typical CTF servers, and Nite's is a good example.

By the way, if that means we turn the Tomb into a mimick of Nite's server, then I would not support the notion unless Nite agrees, since he is the one who ingeniusly developed that idea.  It would make us douche bags to compete like that.  This is my opinion.

Otherwise, my general take is that CTF is dying.  I myself find more pleasure in DM than CTF now, which wasn't the case before.  I know I sound like a shitbag for saying this because I am a Tomb admin myself, but there is only so much we can try to achieve with this particular mod.

making a duplicate of another server, because the idea is hot, won't give us much credit within the community. I think what had always drawn players to the tomb was the fact that we populated it. Because regardless of how many neat features you have theres always one thing that attracts people and that is other people to play with.

i think this community isn't large enough to keep servers populated all the time., and i reckon the fightclub beat it to us. Unless one of you guys can come up with some mods for it, or some ingenious maps i say focus on other Mods with a larger playerbase to support, at least until 1.8 comes out. just my 2cents.

I will support however whatever you guys decide to do with this server. its just on Enuro time there hasnt been anyone interested in playing the damn thing until well into the night here.
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

sadly, we know that the tomb is not attracting very many people anymore. i say we get some input from people who do come into the tomb regularly, not pds members, that also play on other ctf servers regularly on what they like more about other servers and what they like about our server.

I am very happy to announce that nite has agreed to accept my offer of Admin on the Tomb. It is very exciting to me to have the resources of the knowledge he has gained through the success of his server Nites Hideout. even during these leaner times in CTF. Please welcome him as he comes aboard to do what he can to help  us right this ship.

i agree that ctf is a dying mod.  sadly this is do to the long wait until 1.8 release.  i respect them is holding off the release until every bug is work out, but seriously.  People have been waiting for way too long and have now stopped playing because there haven't been any improvements to the mod.

it is fun to play the mod, but there are too many things that can be exploited by the good players that make the game not so much fun for the average gamer.  i have expressed all my feelings about this mod on the ctf forums and all i get back from them is "we have heard this 1000 times and you don't need to say it again."  well if you have heard it 1000 times, maybe you should do something about it.  it seems to me that the people that make this mod are really good at what they do and want to keep a few things a certain way so that they can exploit certain aspects of the game (but they don't want to admit it).

i admit that i don't play the mod as much as i used to.  i have been playing a bit of dm lately and am now doing a lot of work on my new mapping project.  i will jump into ctf from time to time just to get my fix, but i'm not playing it 2-3 times a day like i used to.  i hope the 1.8 comes out soon because the longer they wait, the more people are going to stop playing it.

This should be interesting.

I think Nite is just what the Tomb needs to be restored to it's former glory.

Well it was explained to me like this:

The SDK that 1.7 was created on, has been replaced  many times over since 1.7 came out. And it would have been just as much work redoing all the 1.7 code and recompiling and setting up play tests for a new SDK. Hell, if you think about it it may have taken even longer the way Valve updated their SDK after Episode 1 came out.

it doesn't matter what their excuse is, the end result is that people are slowing leaving their mod because they aren't doing what they promised they were going to do.  maybe these people will return when the ctf team finally does release 1.8 (i know i will).
