Anyone seen an article around that explains the benefits/drawbacks of setting the affinity for certain process to a single core? e.g. is it better to let everything share both cores or is it faster to say, assign hl2 to one core and everything else to another core, or what.

the only time ive tried to set priority is when i ran a ded. server, also ive tried ctf on realtime and it didnt like it one bit, it was rather choppy and i had an undesirable temp. reading...

Dual Core will only be significantly better if you're playing the newest games that are dual core optimized, or if you're doing encoding. All the people that say stuff opens up faster and dramatically lowers load times for general stuff is full of it.

from the benchmarks I've seen dual-core IS faster though. a DC 1.8ghz CPU is faster than a single core. What I was wondering is how setting CPU affinities effects performance - I've read about people assigning all of their OS stuff to one core and then the main app they use (e.g. a game, or dreamweaver, or whatever) to the other core - I was wondering if anyone had actually looked at how this effected performance.

re: games optimized for DC - as I recall the doom3 engine is, but I can't think of anything else I've heard of (Oblivion maybe?). Has anyone seen a list of current and/or future games that are optimized?

My bday is coming and I might be getting an opteron :)
