I was wondering if going from a 7200 sata drive to a 5400 ide drive could be the reason for my slow down? does it really make this much of a difference? i figure the only bottle neck in my whole system is this drive speed issue. let me know what you all think.

Also, because i dont want to completely wipe out my sata drive to clean install windows, is it possible for a IDE to take priority of a SATA drive or is IDE by default given less priority? I need to transfer my old shit from my sata to my new shit (IDE) then do another clean install on the sata and then transfer back the stuff placed onto the IDE to the sata drive after it gets the OS.
Let me know if this is possible... It should be...

let me put this in perspective...

7200 > 5400

SATA > IDE

any questions?

you should get 2 250 gig hard dirve and partion them off into smaller ones. it what i do, make it very easy to back up and reinstall everything.

From what what I have seen, SATA isn't really faster than IDE as far as real world performance goes.
As far as RPM speed goes, faster is nearly always better. It won't necessarily make your computer faster though except in specific circumstances. So for example, loading a map will go quicker but once the map is loaded the performance will be the same. If you are doing stuff that involves reading and writing a lot of data it will go faster (e.g. playing Oblivion). Also, if you don't have a lot of RAM, pagefile = slow so a faster HDD means pagefile = less slow. I personally wouldn't buy a drive slower than 7200rpm for an OS or apps drive in a desktop if I had a choice in the matter. I'd definitely go for a 10K RPM drive if I could afford it. If all you can get is slow, chances are you won't be bothered by it too much most of the time - waiting an extra 10 or 20 seconds for a map to load isn't that big of a deal.

well i have been having problems with HL2DM in that it is a lot more glitchy and laggy and i know its on my side as i have a 30-40 ms ping. When i was in the tomb alone yesterday, everything was like delayed (shoot like a half second later than normal) and laggy . The only thing that really was not upgraded or left the same was the HD. I looked at the ide drive im running on and it sure enough is 7200 rpm. I tried to find the drive speed for my sata and i couldnt but i doubt its a 10000 rpm drive. and since going from sata to ide shouldn't make that much of a difference, whats the deal? its really frustrating as its causing me to play like a complete noob. is there something i didn't do? could it be that my ram is being underclocked by the mobo and would this slow down my gaming performance?

the real jacked part of all of this is that my BIOS will crash my computer if its tweaked at all which is SUPER FUCKING GHEY. so i cant O-clock or run any of the cool things it offers that may be able to speed it up but since i didnt do anything to my old BIOS, this prollly isn't much of a solution for my problems.

that is a bad sign. have you tried flashing to a newer BIOS? Have you run any memtests?

Well if your bios is messed up you could pull the cmos battery, or use the jumper to clear cmos, if your mb supports the jumper. I havea 80 sata hard drive running my windows, and my games and 1 250 gig harddrive ide is my media drive, and my other 250 gig ide hardrive is for backing things up or just misc stuff on it. But now that i got a sata drive i can tell its faster than it was.

i was playing DM today and it appeared to be moving as good, if not better, as before. so all seems to bve fixed

I think the problem was solved when I turned on Jumbo Frames and set it to 9k and upped my tran/rec buffers to 512.

but as far as the bios settings crashing my steez, last night i tried to change my ram speed cuz im dumb and should have known it was a dumb idea but i had to pull the cmos battery and just booted as normal.

come to think of it... this may have been the fix too! anyways... i am going to see if i may be able to o-clock my cpu at all or something but i think my computer is now at 90-100% pending bios stability test

you oc to 3.01 how fast you your cpu normaly? mine runs at 3ghz normal, and on my new setup, i got it to 3.8ghz before i stopped, maybe with good cooling, i could get it to 4ghz.

aight well maybe will up it then and see if it i see a diff

 [edit]

I have a pentium D 2.8 (200x14)

so i have this program that came with the motherboard that overclocks the cpu thru the OS and so i jacked it up 19% to 3320.00 ghz and everything seemed peachy then i threw open HL2DM and started jamming thru bed warfare. i got to about the first hallway vent and all went blue. so.... that was my adventure in overclocking. ya think if i did it thru the bios things would go differently?

You sig is the win Shignog

Anyway, i have a 75 gig raptor (phh its only actually like 69.2) and I must say that it is much faster than my 300 gig 7200. Both are SATA.

I put all my apps on the raptor, movies/music on the 300
