I think its actually of pagan origin, Germanic tribes or something who considered a figure who used give gifts like Santa a God. Then with the advent of Christianity Santa Claus was merged with the legend of St. Nicholas, a Christian, so it has Christian connotations. However the modern image of Santa has more to do with (i think mainly American) companies exploitation of his image. Chirstmas is more a commercial holiday than religious. Apparently a Christmas tree in a public hospital is offensive, even if that hospital be owned by a religious organisation. Yet these are the same folks who want public money to fund the construction of thier own places's of worship... Why would you come to a country that has the status of the Church acknowledged in its constiution (talking speecifically about Ireland here) if you're not prepared to have images of Christianity shoved down your throat? /rant yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.
