I'm looking to replace my X800 ATI card with a nVidia card. I've been looking at the 7 series, but which one would be good bang for the buck? My budget is no higher than $250. With Direct X 10 coming out, would it be best to wait? hell, if I had the money I would go for the GeForce 8800...that I know is one kick ass card!

7600GT is really cheap these days and a decent card. I wouldn't buy a DX10 card until it's actually worthwhile, which will be a damn long time if it's true that MS will never release DX10 for XP. I'm sure we will see a LOT of DX9 games (or DX10 games that run great with DX9) for a long time. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

7600GT is a decent card, but hands down the best bang for buck card would be the 7900GTO from EVGA or MSI. They retail for $250 but they're pretty much gone from all retail places, but can be found used on various forums or ebay. The 7900GTO is an underclocked 7900GTX that can easily be overclocked past GTX speeds, and they were half the price of a GTX.
I frequent the Anandtech For Sale/Trade and see someone who's selling one for $260 shipped. If you want, I can help inquire about it for you.

Thx all for ur feedback!
It sounds good...I will start comparing prices for the 7600 card.
Now out of curiousity, any ATI fans out there? Or if you're not, why don't you like it?
I personally had the AIW 9800 a couple years ago and found having TV on my computer was nice; however, gaming wasn't flashy, as I expected. I did make use of it and used its maximum capabilites, but it got outdated pretty fast. I have the Radeon X800 XL...and I bought it no longer than half a year, and I can't even play the new tom clancy games that I wanted, it says it needs shader model 3.....any radeon card X1400 and under does not support that.....so it pissed me right off. I found out GeForce 6 and 7 series supports that....so I am totally regretting buying ATI. {pDs} *LoneOfficier*"...crossbow+lone....unseparable....!"-LoneOfficier

Well, ATI does not have bad cards. People actually argue quite a bit that they're cards are worth it more than Nvidia. You can pick up a X1900XT for $200-250 depending on whether you grab the 256mb or 512mb version. The X1900XT is faster than the whole 7900 series, and they're priced pretty good right now.

Nvidia, works very closely with evga, so that is my reccomendation. Best bang 4 buck is 7600. Also, think of future needs, and if you do plan on sli, best to have a highly rated power supply. such as antec. You never regret spending extra on quality. Buy a toyota...

You crazy or something? The X1900XTX has been top dog in the video card category till the 7950GX2 (shouldn't even count since it's 2 cards soldered together) and 8800GTX came out. ATI has always been better than Nvidia when it came to incredibly high resolutions with Anti-Aliasing and Anisoptric Filtering. And Nvidia just only recently got their new 8800 series to run HDR lighting with Anti-Aliasing.

ok the 6600 gt i have beats the x700 pro i have and the pro is a 256 meg card and the gt is a a 128 mb card. And if you dont belive me i have pics of benchmarks that prove it. The gt is abit more power hungry than my ati card but thats ok. Im not saying ati is a bad brand just never been really happy with the performance of it. I can run all most all my games on high graphics and high rez, higher than my x700 pro ever got anyways, and AA and AF not a big deal to me really. on fear i can run everything on high and did video test, min 26fps,avg 38 fps max 83 fps, and thats with the 66.93 forceware dirvers i was thinking about d/l newer ones to see if i get an increes of fps or not. My ATi never got even close to that with everything turned on high. I just have not been as impressed with the ati as i have been the nvidia. No i have not used everyone ati card or nvidia card either. Amd now that ATI was bought by AMD, i fear ATI will never be as good.
But maybe you have had better luck with ati, but im sticking with what i have found that works for me and that nvidia. Actually, I have to agree a little more with Shignog here. Certain games do better with the ATI over nVidia cards, and vise versa. However the comparison between the two with certain games is normally such a small difference it doesn't matter. ATI does have better AA + antio., in their 1900XT(x) cards over the 7 series, but the 8800 is fixing that issue with nvidia cards. The 7900GTX battles the X1900XTX so closely I wouldn't say it's the "top dog". Look: http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/340/8/ It was a toss up for the cards where the XTX lead slightly, but the XTX definitely had better options for overclocking, and was considerably cheaper when these two were competing against each other. I consider that being "top dog"
