So I come home, set up my laptop, start Steam and . . . Half-Life 2:Deathmatch Pre-load Complete. I can't play! Any thoughts? You should be more like Cantrip.  Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." So I thought that if it was preloaded, I could just add my product activation code and that would fix it. However, I got a message that I already had that game and all I needed to do was to play it.  *sigh*
So I try to play it and I can't. I just checked on the games screen. OMFG, all my games are installing. You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." That happens to me. On random days Steam thinks I like it when I can't play any games.

Tried to reinstall Steam and all it did was take me to my game page. Only the games were all installed. When I try to launch, it' reads "download paused" then goes back to showing the game is installed. And then, nothing. I can't even reinstall Steam! You should be more like Cantrip. Did you uninstall it and confirm you had deleted all traces of your games?

Uh, no. I thought by downloading Steam again it would override the files. Boy, that sounds rather Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan-ish. Delete the files using the add/remove feature in Windows? Man, you sure went through alot of steps. The same thing happened to me and I just rebooted and it came back fine. Looks like you'll have to start from scratch.

EDIT: On the upside, it seems that a "preload complete" on the hl2dm front may mean we're gonna get an update. although it's probably just steam taking a huge steaming shit on our games. Well, I'm out until Steam finishes having its way with me. I deleted everything just as Whut suggested. I downloaded a new Steam App and took most of the night to download HL2DM at 65Kb/s then tried to launch the game. Nada. I got the same thing. "Ready - 100%" then "Download Paused" for a moment or two and nothing.
I've already sent Steam the problem, but from past experience, you guys will come up with a solution weeks before Steam ever gets back to me.

threaten to sue them in an email until they fix the problem, because they arent providing you with the service you paid for... bit extreme but if nothing else works out... in Ireland we have the small claims court... no idea what the equivalent is there... yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

OMFG. I tried to play again today and got this new bit of pain:

Now I try to run it and it pauses download and does nothing as before.

Dear Diary,
Last night I uninstalled and reinstalled Steam onto my laptop (Abel) for the second time. I only loaded HL2DM because I didn't want to load every game I own, only to find out Steam is being fickle. I reported to you last week that Steam took a huge dump in my machine. I still haven't forgiven Steam for that. No luck with the reinstall.
I was thinking what if Steam isn't the problem? Maybe my current laptop, Abel, is the problem and Steam is acting out as a result. I haven't had any DM play for four days now. I have to have it every day, and I'm not getting it. So last night I turned off my current laptop, Abel, and left him off.
While Abel was sleeping, I secretly snuck out an old flame of a laptop (John). He isn't much to look at. He's an IBM T2 or T22 with 1200MHZ Pentium 3 processor, 256mb ram, and Windows XP Pro. I don't think there is much in the way of a video card or chip rather, and I think that's why I left him. Abel has a much better video card package. Abel satisfies me well, and how. ; ) I get goosebumps just thinking about him. But not so lately since Steam took a dump in him.
Anyway, when I pulled John out of his case, I had to dust him off. I plugged him in, turned him on and the first thing he did was complain that he had like 25 Windows updates and his anti-virus hadn't been updated in a year. Complain, complain, complain. So I let him have his fill of broadband. I even took the snazzy wireless card out of my Abel so my John could use it. I must admit, I felt really bad about doing that, but my Abel won't know because he might as well be out of town on business when he's powered down.
So, that's it. I closed down John secure in the feeling that everything was updated and ready to receive the Steam app and HL2DM just to see if John can run it. I can't tell you how it makes me feel to rekindle the old ram in John. I can't wait to come home after work and grab that mouse of his and run my fingers over his A,W,S and D keys. Mmm, maybe a little space bar too. OMG Diary, I'm excited just thinking about it!
I have to keep it a secret from Abel though. It's just not right for him to find out, but Abel is not satisfying me at the moment the way John might. I don't know. I'll find out tonight when I load Steam onto John. I don't think I'll power up Abel while John's around. That would create unnecessary drama.
I feel so dirty.

omg, you named your computers, you are dirty.
if you have reloaded steam and HL2DM twice and you are still having issues, its possible that your computer might screwed. you might need to reload windows. i know last time i was having similar problems to what you are describing, it was the last straw for me and i spent a day reloading and updating my unit. i got rid of so much crap that i don't use any more and it runs great again. you might think about doing this.
