I have this problem I cannot figure out, its part of my take home final for Math RE 101 AKA Math Retarded 101, was hoping one of you could help me out here.  Thanks.

out of a total of 1.84x10^7 georgia produced 11% of that so 1.84x10^7 x 0.11 = 0.2024x10^7 or 2024000 thats basic algebra man... I read ALL your private messages.

I think the point of this question was there's an easy way, and then there are hard and even harder ways to figure it out. Always look at the question they're asking and answer it without getting distracted by fluff. The fluff here was all the other states' production numbers, the pretty picture. and the scientific notation on the number of bushels produced.
I assume this is a word problem akin to something you would see on an SAT exam where you have less than a minute for each problem. The way you get good at these is to do lots of them, then you see a pattern so when you take your test, you won't be figuring it out for the first time under the clock. well at least you have the answer in front of you. i'm trying to study for the MCAT and they give you an entire passage, then ask you something thats not in the passage. they call it critical thinking. sometimes i wish things were more straight forward and time consuming.

Instead of simply giving you an answer or a shortcutted way of getting to the answer, I'll give you an easy-to-remember way of solving the equation. Use fractions.
Georgia = 11 Percent
All of the United States = 100 Percent
Now, make that a fraction 11/100
Now make this fraction equal to the corresponding number of bushels (Georgia's amount goes on top, US on bottom).
Georgia = x (what we're trying to find)
All of the United States = 1.84 x 10^7
Solve for x by cross multiplication.
11 X
___ x _________ So we are left with 100X = 11 (1.84 x 10^7), then simply divide both sides by 100 to isolate the X.
100 1.84 x 10^7
We are then left with (what you would put in the calculator) X = (11 (1.84 x 10^7))

This way is a little bit longer, but it goes a long way in helping you understand the fundamentals behind these problems. It isn't calculus (I flunked that shit), it's just crap you learned in 6th grade with bigger numbers. Iraq-Bound
