So, I got bored today so i decided to research some pricing on Dell Products. Over the past couple of years i have heard many negative things about over pricing and heating issues with Dell laptops.

This is what I found that shocked me.

We will start with the processor upgrade.

To get a        Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7600G (2.33GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB)    It is +700$s + the price of the base processor (270's)

On www.Newegg.com it cost 637$'s,        now that is 330$'s in the pocket.....

So now I am at $3,179 so i decide if I am gona spend this kinda money on a comp I might as well spend the money to get 4gb DDR2 ram at 533mhz      (Mind you there really is no use for this but the greatly encourage it on the web site and I am trying to be in the mind set of a 13 year old kid who got a new comp for his birthday.) So yea, this little upgrade will only cost me +1,800$s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yep... you heard me, 1,800 + the original 700$ for the base Ram just for 2 extra gb. Now lts check with our buds at newegg... $569.99 yep.... =6.99 for shipping.

As for the hard drive... well you can figure this one out, its only 80gb... and then you add 45-115$s to the base price for a larger drive, the drive is so shitty i cant find it anywhere ....

And last but no least, the video card.... Its a 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7950 GTX  for only 399$s!!!!!!!!! PLUS THE BASE PRICE FOR STOCK CARD OF 500$s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAYAYAYAY!  Now this one just blew me away, you can buy this same card for only 299$s on newegg.. GAHHH! SO MUCH CHEAPER!

So lets see... you will end up saving  1,440 just on these parts (the only ones you can customize) And then when you remove the brand name you will end up saving around 2,000$s so yea, Don't buy dell, and GO EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

meh, i have a shit load of DELL computers.  i keep buying them because when you price them out compared to a SONY, HP, etc, you end up getting the same thing for less money.  Also DELL has always offered more rebates then the other companies.  the funny thing is they all tend to have the same parts in them, the only difference is the outer plastic and a logo.  who cares.

true, you can always price something out way cheaper if you are going to piece it together and build it yourself, we all know that.  but have fun doing that with a laptop.  also, especially if your looking at laptops, i wouldn't piece it together because something will always happen to your laptop.  NOTHING is better then accidental coverage.  with my DELL, $99 for 4 years of coverage.  anything i do to it and its covered for free, that includes shipping.  you can't get that kind of a deal if you build it.  just last month i called them up and told them my cd-rom isn't working 100% of the time.  they guy got my information, then in 2 days i had a new cd-rom at my door and a box to ship them my old one (don't know why they would want it back).

anyway, to each their own.  if you want to build your own laptop, have fun.  from my experiences, you computer treats you as good as you treat it, no matter what name is on it.  and there is nothing better in this world then a warranty.

Alot of companys overcharge for there stuff, but dell you cant do anything with them they are junk, I have a friend has one that dc and everything, but the only thing he can chabge in the bios is turn off/on the floppy drive,. He bought a x1300, or 1600 i dont remeber but it had 512 ram and the pci-e slot and mb only uses 256. If you dont have alot of money and want a cheap computer for school or wha buy a dell you can pick one up for like $350 but dont expect much. Best bet is to build your own for half the price you could get a better computer. If anything go with hp they have good prices and pretty good laptops from what i saw when i was looking into it.

Having built a few computers now, my dad came to me and asked me to build him a computer for work. (His was so old he couldn't even run the new quickbooks/turbotax).

I started out building something suitable on dell's site, just to get an estimate on the cost. I went over to Newegg, priced it all out and it would have ended up costing me MORE to build it myself. He went with the Dell and he got it about a week ago now, and it came in perfect working shape.

I have owned 2 different Dell computers and can say that I have had absolutely no problems with them at all.  Yes they may be overpriced, but as with anything, you get what you pay for.  I have played at a minimum 3000 + hours on my gaming computer and have had no problems at all.  If I had to do it again (which I am sure I will), I would definitely keep Dell in mind.  Fuck Gateway all the way!

in my experience Dell = most competative prices for a fully assembled rig, especially at the low end (with good warranties and services too), but are bad for upgrading and overclocking. But quite frankly if you are into upgrading and overclocking you should be building your own PC. In my own experience most of the Dell marketing i come across is lower end stuff anway so in my opinion Dell don't really aim at the techno geeks who want high end shit as nearly always these types will build their own shit anyway. It would be a waste of time marketing at them and they would have to cut margins by waaaay too much to be able to compete.

Crass you seem to be forgetting that with Dell you're paying for assembly as well, so building your own is *almost* always going to be cheaper. you guys who aim hits at Dell or other manufacturers are just engaging in a pointless enterprise and wasting forum space.
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

Well, i actualy think that i am saving forum space by posting this. I bet you cant even tell me how manyu threads have been posted on this forum labled "Getting a new comp" and how many of these threads are about buying a high end comp from dell or some other manufacturer. And also if you look at my audiance, most of the pople that spend time on these forums are gamers......... And i dont think that u can play HL2DM on a 300 dollar dell...

Yea, Dells aren't good for higher-end, as much as they want to be. If your on the cheaper/budget end of computers, Dell will be cheaper. However, if you want a nice gaming rig, its still gonna be cheaper to build
